"In Safe hands" Mission fault...

Took an "In Safe hands" Mission...as part of my never-ending quest to gain Federation Rank!
Loitered in the target system for ages...pinging back and forth between Nav Beacon and Orbital stopping at every USS, scanning every ship in SC...
I eventually found my Mission target NPC in a USS...Wanted no less...hey ho...will wait for him to contact me...No luck...he attacks me! I try to disable his powerplant in the hope it'll calm him down...but he's in a tissue paper sidewinder...and I accidently brew him up instead...ooops!
Now, funny thing is...Transaction description is still open...no mission fail...
So should I keep looking for another "Mark Briscoe" or give up and abandon the mission...take the Rep hit for mission failure...

Guess what...

(he was somebody elses mission target, not yours).

There is no point in hanging around the target system until your mission updates. It will do that at a given time after the timer runs out. In the mean time, go & do something else then head back there once the mission has updated. Your target should turn up & you give the data to the guy (he will drop out of SC, you follow him in).

Hanging around in the target system before the mission updates & tells you to go there can bug the mission, don't do it.

If your contact shows up he will contact you in supercruise via the comms panel. That is IF he/she shows up. These missions are unreliable. I've had contacts showing up 3 hours later that the time window given in the mission description.

Yep, just do something else until the mission updates, this can take some time. Had a mission that updated after 1,5 hours.
