In The Ancient Language Of Romanian, The Galcondans Distill "The Water of Life"

As I stepped off Division I caught a glimpse of Cadence's father speaking with Rosie's crew. His chest was heaving as he lifted a crate of railgun munitions that were probably headed toward Division and Rosie watched him with closely-guarded admiration. He'd been taking on an increasing leadership role in maintaining the morale and order of the crew as we all awaited clearance for extraction from HR 32. Our resources were growing slim and Cadence was growing increasingly absent-minded, on a no-fly order from Orion.

I stopped in at the laboratory to check on my greenhouse and the potatoes had begun to sprout leaves. Dad walked past, on his way to Cadence's quarters from the bridge and he poked his head in to ask if I'd made any headway. I shrugged my shoulders and before I opened my mouth he waved me off, nodding his head in the direction of Cadence's quarters, and I nodded, turning to my peas. They were beginning to grow ripe. I'd made further additions to the structure that now took up a third of my area of Cadence's quarters and stood two heads taller than dad, a new constellation in the corner of the room under the right light.

Orion was seated on Cadence's bunk, brushing his shoes to a polish, and Dad was following a line of peas as they wobbled from east to west through one of the tubes. Cadence was seated with her legs crossed in the corner, reviewing a network map of Zachary Rackham's holdings and associates. She looked in my direction when I walked in and leapt to her feet. Following me as I walked toward my bunk, she bounced on her toes moving toward my six. My eyes darted right and I turned my head slightly. I could feel her getting closer and when I turned around on my heels she stopped immediately, jerking her head to the right and looking at Orion.

"Are we ready?"

I sat down on my bunk and pulled off my mag-boots before slipping behind a locker to change and Orion peered around it to ask me if I was ready to go over some of our findings. I looked away from him, briefly, turning to him and nodding. His eyes never left my face and he smiled before turning to dad, having him call up his own briefing. I turned the corner and Cadence was waiting with a smile on her face.

"Cadence, let's get to work."

Cadence's chin collapsed into her neck and she turned toward him and Orion, her shoulders slumping and her head lolling left and right as she trudged toward the two. I walked toward Cadence's computer and input my data before turning to the three.

"Long story short, I couldn't find much. I checked in on the Artificers Clan dredger and couldn't establish contact. Neither did the ship's logs and uplinks provide any information, whatsoever. I did give it some thought, thinking that maybe they had showed up for some of the Apa Vietii, but neither did they respond when I'd held a full load, nor when I'd abandoned a few tons of it within the ship's mass-lock range. I did some looking around and photographed an emblem on the side of the clan's dredger, hoping it might shed some light on why they happened to show up, but any possible symbolic meaning looks to be coincidental, at best. The dredgers' thrusters are the main object of the emblem, and it might give us a chance to pry open whatever it is they're up to. They could be looking at the Galconda to try to piece together the engineering that was used by the original emigrants from Sol, maybe to compare it to their own. They might be in some trouble. Or they could have just been hoping to have a drink. I did see something cool at the agricultural vessel in the mass-lock range of the dredger and Galconda, though.

Dad and Cadence immediately tucked their chins into their necks, coughing down laughs. Cadence leaned and brushed up against Orion, who immediately turned his wide-eyed smile of wonder toward Cadence. She stiffened when she realized she was leaning against him and straightened her posture as dad interjected,

"Cadence, do you remember anything about the Galconda and its logs from your vacation that might give us a chance to figure out what it is they're doing there?"

Cadence looked toward the peas for a brief moment. I followed her gaze and a trail of seven wobbled toward an open-faced can I'd sealed with polyurethane. She turned back to me and shrugged her shoulders.

"Not particularly. Its sort of a sad story and I wasn't doing too much thinking about it beyond how it fit into the entirety of my vacation. A bunch of people aboard the ship caught a disease they were calling "The Wasting Kiss" and then everyone died, or something, right?"

Dad jerked his head to the right before shaking his head slowly.

"Not everyone died. There wouldn't be anyone in there distilling the Apa Vietta if everyone died, Cadence."

Cadence looked back toward the peas, furrowing her brow and squinting before a laugh made her quiver. Orion turned to me,

"They're currently operating in partnership with the Federation. Is there any possibility that the Artificers Clan is tied to Rackham?"

I turned away for a second, before turning back,

"Who knows? We don't have any intelligence on the possibility that the Artificers feel some kind of kinship toward the Galcondans, do we?"

The three shook their heads and I continued,

"What's the possibility that the Artificers might have just showed up, hoping to get a drink, only to have Rackham's party in Beta Hydri taxing the inventory at Forester's Choice?"

Dad laughed and Orion chimed in,

"You think it might be something we could exploit?"

I looked at Orion, squinting,

"You're asking me if I think the Artificers might be so bereaved at Zachary Rackham, one of the galaxy's wealthiest human beings, who is toying with the idea of a run at the presidency of the Federation, for having a party that's keeping them from picking up some booze, that we could possibly exploit them for information on what he's up to, or to act against him on our behalf?"

Dad and Cadence's eyes opened wide as they looked away, Cadence's lips tucking into the right corner of her mouth and in the silence Orion smiled and nodded.
