Where can I find out what the symbols next to stations are (orbital, coriolis, planetary etc)?

Hover your mouse pointer over them and a little info box appears. (Called mouseover / hover-box.)

it doesnt work. It hovers but doesnt say what type of station it is. I can guess what most of them are but want to be sure.

There are two surface ports from what I see on Inara. One has a bigger top square than the other. I take it to be one is a planetary port and the other a settlement?

One is a Planetary Port the other is a Planetary Outpost - settlements have no (usable) landing pads.
