Incentive to comeback?

I’ve been gone from Elite for quite a while now, about 8 months officially. I know not much can change in 8 months when it comes to such a large scale game like Elite, but I’ve read pieces here and there about each update.

I logged on yesterday for the first time, and essentially everything acted the same, maybe a few bug fixes here and there which are always appreciated.

Is there anything substantial that I should play again for? Are the thargoids really here, or do I have to scour space to find just one ship and have it basically fly away or kill me instantly.

I want to play Elite with the same passion I used to, I know I can, somebody just help sell it to me!

You do not have to scour space. There is a known area and they are everywhere, threat 5 USS and hyperdictions. But they won't try to kill you unless you have their stuff in your cargo hold and they will go hostile if you fire on them. Depending on the ship you fly, they probably won't kill you too quick. They tend to stick around for a while. Check out the aliens sub forum for more.

If goids are your thing. Than hell yes come back.
If its mining and exploration come back at the end of next year.
Its still a inch deep cmdr. Unfortunately

Sounds like it's already been sold to you. Yes, Thargoid ships are out there to be found, can be engaged and can be blown up, if that's your thing.

Some bugs have been fixed, some new ones introduced, but has anything universe-shaking happened? I'll be honest. No.

In fact, many people are finding it much worse - you can no longer stack massacre missions and have 1 kill count against 20 missions. You can not longer stack skimmer kills in the same manner, and you can no longer scan 1 planetary data point to get credit for 20 missions. You actually have to work for your credits and rep. Of course, if you didn't use these methods to fast-track you to instant wealth, then you probably won't notice a difference at all. But for Universe-shaking, game-changing innovation, you might just want to put off your own Return until Q4 next year, when Season 3 should be at least 50% released.

Well, most games don't actually act any different, otherwise it'd be a different game. :p

But there's a fair bit to explore, finding it can be a pain, unless you read the foruns a lot.

Thargoids are a bit 'meh'. I've not enjoyed my shenanigans with them as much as I'd hoped. While everyone else it seems gets pulled out of Hyperspace, and whatnot, I seem to be stuck having to chase them down.
I've still never once been hyperdicted. Lol

But basically, it's the same game as it was at the beginning of the year, that's never really going to change. We're going to get new content, but it'll still be Elite: Dangerous at the end of the day. :)
Not saying that's a bad thing btw.

Unless the Thargoids progress into some interesting gameplay, I can't see myself returning until "Beyond," and only then under the same caveat.

The game's stayed so flat for me for too long, so I just need it to move on and start offering some layered/involved gameplay before I can see myself coming back.

ps: I do duck into it everynow and then - For example to look at the latest cut scene etc...

I agree with all of the above posts. My Thargoid interaction has been trying to get samples, it's basically a spin on the mining process. I haven't been successful yet, Thargoids either ignore you or scrap with you if provoked, so Thargoid content for me is pretty bland. I'm not particularly interested in the fighting aspect of Thaargoids, it seems to be very formulaic. You know, first use your missiles, then drop the shield, then use the laser, then scan the first heart, then get your buddy to fire another salvo, then step 9/10/11 etc etc. That's the ultimate in boring to me.
I'd say there is enough different and/or improved material to come back for, Thargoids are worth a bit of interaction. But make no mistake, the fundamentals of the game are 95% the same, haul, trade, bounty hunt etc etc.
