Comms panel (The "chat"), fourth tab (I think, maybe fifth). You will see a blue "unread messages" icon next to it.
You can also check the mission details in your left panel, transactions. It will also have "Updated" next to it, if you have more missions there. If you click on it and scroll down you can read the details, updates and optional objectives.
You can access your comms panel by either pressing 2 by default, or on joystick it is "Focus"+"up"

That, plus its on the top of your hud/cockpit. You'll see the symbol there.
The pain for me is that they always come in when I am trying to get through the slot. No way am I going to try and read it then.
But, once I have the UI open, I can move around in it with the top hat on my E3D so it is just hhit 2 to open and escape to close.
The real downer is when you land, read it and find out it's redirected you to another station. Rare, but it does happen.

Ok. This opens up a whole new line of questions.
Is it possible to get through the Slot, get out of the way so you don't get hammered for loitering, read the message, find out about the redirect, and ask to leave the station without landing at all??
Yes, you can continue a couple hundred meters into the station to clear the entrance area and come to halt. If you stay near the axis and don't approach any of the landing pads (which could earn you a loitering warning, fine and eventually quick death if you didn't move away) you have 10 minutes to do whatever you need. Then you can either lad on your designated pad or turn around and leave the station.

I stopped reading them, mainly due to the message being mainly about diverting the cargo to another destination or that combat ships are pursuing. Because iI fly an Imperial Cipper with no weapons and 228 tons of material so I always assume I am being followed . I usually am able to evade about 99% of all interdiction attemps and if not I run away. My missions are for one destination and I don't do side trips due to an change in routing. Have fun CMD
