Newcomer / Intro Incorrect Cockpit Mode

My mining lasers are bound to button 1 (trigger) in my fire groups. I have also done a secondary bind for "fire weapons" under "controls" by assigning it to the right bracket key.

I have an ancient nostromo pad that allows me to program a key to hold down that bracket key which creates continuous fire until I hit the key again on my nostromo. I've done this so I can manage my inventory and do other "hands off" things while I'm mining.

My problem is that every time that held key cycles (every 2 seconds) I get a huge "INCORRECT COCKPIT MODE PRESS M TO SWITCH" message that basically holds on the screen in the upper right.

But...I'm not in the wrong mode. Or at least everything is doing what i want it to do except for that annoying warning message.

What am I doing wrong? Can I make it stop?

Hope that made sense.

Thanks

That warning comes up whenever you have devices bound to that fire group and fire button that are not available in this cockpit mode. I see it often when I've switched to combat mode, but have the firegroups still set up for the disco scanner.

The fire groups allow you to put anything in there, whether it requires Combat Mode, or Analysis Mode. If you mix both kinds in one fire group then there's no way to avoid the message, because something will always be in the wrong mode. Everything that's in the right mode will work, and everything that's in the wrong mode will issue that error (and do nothing).

Having the 2 modes is a very strange design decision -- there's really no need for it. It provides no advantages. But it is what it is, so get used to it.

I personally never mix types in a fire group, because that warning bugs me too much :)

It does. It allows the game to spam you with one more unnecessary and increasingly annoying warning pop-up.

If done correctly (and I believe it was the initial plan) this functionality would technically allow you to have twice the amount of firegroups set up without having to flick through all of them every time. But in good ol' Fdev fashion, they didn't QUITE get there.

It's not just firegroups, it's other hotkeys and joystick modes to like the FSS scanner. Using keyboard and mouse would be pretty unusable now without the ability to switch modes - they've added so much.
