I'm not sure if it has been suggested before but I've been thinking how ship builds need more variety. If we could upgrade core internal sizes at the cost of an optional internal slot we could make ships with larger distributors, power plants, or thrusters making more interesting outcomes.
The way I see it, it could be implemented by increasing the size of the current internal module if the current core and an optional slot could hold the weight of the next class module. This would be balanced by having ships with better performance in certain aspects but hindering other things, for example, having ships run faster but resulting in less shields.
A quick outcome that comes to mind would be a cutter with class 9 thrusters and class 8 distributor but would be limited by the new power draw and being limited by not having its class 8 optional slots and resorting to class 6 shield generators.
