Increasing Cargo Capacity Without Changing Ships

Hi All,

Really loving what they've done so far! Flying around using my Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas-X with surround headphones on - there's nothing quite like it! I can't wait to see what they do next! Anyway...

In the original classic Elite for the BBC, I remember being able to purchase space compression modules that increased the hull capacity of your current ship. You were able to purchase them as and when you had enough credits, yet your ship was limited to how many it could have in total. Does anyone know if this feature will exist in Elite Dangerous?

Cheers,

DazzyB.

I remember cargo compression being a feature of the original Egosoft game, certainly. Was that really in Elite or Frontier 1/2? I don't remember.

In any case, there will be a variety of ships available to us with differing hold capacities. Right now our choices are somewhat limited.

Original Elite did not have cargo compression- it just had a Large Cargo Bay upgrade, taking you from 20t to 35.

Actually, they were called 'Cargo Bay Extensions' but according to the original Elite manual, they worked by compressing the space in the cargo bay. I think that was where I got that from. However, you are right in that they added an additional 15 tons and no more. My apologies!

Ps My memory isn't as good as it was back in the original Elite days! ;)

Ships have different strengths and weaknesses, got to choose the right one for whatever you want to do. For some, small cargo is a weakness.

i don't think you can buy cargo bay extensions, however, you can buy cargo bay reductions and that is already planned :)

why? to increase jump range and/or fuel tank capacity, that all will be at cargo bay expense ;)

The original Elite only had one ship, so it made sense that you could upgrade the cargo capacity at cost, as where here we'll be getting 20 at launch - with probably at least a 3rd of those being devoted to cargo capacity.

If the current ship progression in beta is a true representation of what we can expect, then it may even be that 10/20 of ships are either devoted purely to cargo or sit somewhere in the middle (i.e. the cobra).

Don't really see that we'll need bay extensions ;)

This is effectively the progression tree right now;

Sidewinder > Eagle/Hauler > Cobra > Viper/Lakon 6 > Anaconda/Lakon 9

So with the exception of the Sidewinder, and ignoring the Cobra as it handles both cargo and combat, there is a focus on cargo capacity at every stage.

I keep starting to type the word "level" but "stage" is probably more accurate

I'll be disappointed if there are no cargo bay extensions in the final release. In the first game they were the first bit of kit everyone bought. Why would they be needed now when other hulls are available? Because they'd be a (presumably) cheaper way of increasing cargo space.

Maybe they'll have them maybe they won't, but don't expect to be able to just upgrade cargo space without any other consequence. Maybe you get a larger cargo capacity by changing to a smaller engine, so perhaps your jump range will be reduced or perhaps there will be less power for your systems.

Of course, cargo bay extensions should lead to some other cost, as well as taking up an utility slot and increasing insurance cost.

Question is they were there in the first place because there were no other ships :)

Cargo space compression is a bit too much on the handwavium, particularly when the internals of the ships are now fully modeled - would the containers become magically smaller? When the existing technology doesn't even allow for artificial gravity?

Possibly I could see a cargo optimizer - an automated system that would allow you to fill some more cargo (25% in a SW, and decreasing from there) in the hold by using wasted space. The extra mass would affect your ship range and possibly handling.
