Independent commander in a solo cz

I've been fighting in quite a few high intensity CZs this weekend in solo and in a couple of them an "independent commander" dropped in. There was a warning over comms, so I targeted them and engaged, tbh I didn't pay any attention to ship or loadout, but they we're pretty tough going, and in both cases, after I got their shields down they waked out. I've had spec ops, war correspondents and capital ships, but never noticed these before. Anyone know what they are?

Do you mean independent commander or independent captain? Over comms they'll say something like "an enemy command ship is in the area".

They hang around on a timer and then leave, they're pretty beefy, and invariably fly one of the big three. The timer isn't very long, so if you want to get them, you'll have to target them as soon as the comms warning comes up and focus their shields down with everything you have. Target their FSD rather than their power plant to stop them just waking out when the timer hits - on occasions I've seen the timer run out when they've had a destroyed drive and they just end up flying in a straight line away from the zone which makes them a fairly easy kill at that point provided you can keep up with them.

Thanks cmdr, I reckon you are right. My mind somehow must have replaced captain with commander, I'll blame it on the fog of war! But that is an interesting mechanic i.e. the timer, I did not know that so will pay more attention next time and target the fsd.

rumor has it they drop small seismic charges if you blow them up before they wake out

Is there a beefier reward for nailing these captains?
Credits =Nope
war status = yes More of your side get to live...
If they are dead they can not kill your side then... same reason to kill spec ops as if you don't they "can" kill your sides ships...
With out the distraction of other ships as they killed them, they can start targeting you...
The green bar does fill up faster if they are dead...

Edit to correct a few works for later readers..
