It would be fun and interesting to be able to send crew on independent adventures of their own.

We currently pay a %of income to your crew, “pirate style”, which some folks argue with, but tbh I think is both simple and in line with historical “crew” pay by shares ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirate_code ). So, no change needed to pay; it’s already factored in.

Crew on downtime become “agents” of the commander, and can engage in activities independently, in a kind of “gambling” interface. This is purely a text/ui, no new graphics needed, just menu items and background calculations.

The commander picks the activity, from a short list (trade, exploration, piracy, bounty hunting etc), and picks which of the commander’s ships to allow the crew member to fly, and - maybe - chooses a risk/threat level. Depending on the experience level of the crew member, and the choice of ship, the activity might be successful (to varying extents) or fail, or even require rebuy of the ship.

The result of the activity takes 24 hours to happen, and can be managed at any station/settlement/megaship/carrier with a crew lounge. The ship used is unusable for the duration (like the shipyard transport window).

The more crew and ships you have, the more you can send off like this, but the more your share is diluted. With 3 skilled pilots in good ships, you can have a comfortable increase in credits, although this will require you to log in daily, to manage the crew’s activities, arrange rebuys etc. And there’s always the risk of having to eat several expensive rebuys in succession.
