Infinity -- In Development...Landing on Planets!

I recommend people visit Infinity and download and watch this. It's a game currently in development. It has seemless Orbit to Planet landing... here's a link to the Video

The planets are generated procedurally!

From the FAQ
"How many solar systems are present in Infinity ?
A lot. Since they are generated procedurally on-the-fly, they cannot easily be counted. But I tried to respect realistic numbers. Expect a galaxy with up to hundreds of billions of worlds. You will not be able to visit them all in your whole lifetime, even if you were to spend only one second per world!"

Of course it's not Elite 4, but it could give you a taste of what it would feel like.

Here's the weird thing, the guys last name is Brebion, pretty darn close to Braben.

fine...

Hi Folks,

That’s the way it should look like....
FFE with DirectX 9 graphic’s....fine... fine
Thanks a lot...

If you can build 50 different Planets (not Suns)...
Than it’s no problem to build billions of Star Systems
(Sometimes looking the same....but who cares)

I think Mr. Braben should definately hire Mr. Brebion... This is exactly how my encounters with the surface happend back in Frontier. Of course graphics in those days were only suggestive; the brain actually had to do the conversion work :p

Ohh, the planet rises and sunsets this would have made... Is that rayleigh scattering or "just" a colored atmosphere?

Very beautiful indeed.

Holy Cow!

That is damn impressive.

Would've liked to see the 'ship' actually get closer to the ground, to make out individual trees and blades of grass.

Cheers!

I really got happy to hear of this project.. Didn't hear of it until yesterday!

I was just googling for Elite like I do sometimes, hungering for news on Elite 4 as you can understand, then I come across this breathtaking work.

It also feels a lot like Elite 2/3 in the way the ship is controlled with the mouse. Except you also have dorsal/ventral and starboard/port thrusters, so you can "strafe" your ship also..

One thing which Braben's game has that Brebion's game won't have, is that you will be playing individual people, instead of just a ship. So I wonder what the potentials would be for that.. Imagine moving around inside your own ship, doing maintenance work, repairing a circuit or something. Would be cool to have subgames where you could try to repair your own ship if you had the skill (not RPG-skill, but player-skill).

It's nice to see more people trying out procedural methods of gaming.. Another game in that vein would be "Spore"

It looks like there's a fair way to go, though. The due date of "end 2007" might be a bit optimistic :(

To looks really awesome, too bad its massive multiplayer online. I just don't have time or money to try this out. And i don't like MMO games, they are dangerously addictive to some people. Landing on planets is something I have dreamed about since FFE, why don't other Elite clones take the time to develop this, specially X series.

perspectives and responses

Around 1998 there was the first rumour of a game named elite 4. In 2000/2001 the rumour got commercial newsvalue. "The news" appeared in magazines. The game, so the public was told, to be released 2002.
Around 2003/2004 there was the first rumour of a game named Infinity. In 2005/2006 the rumour got commercial newsvalue. "The news" appeared in magazines/on internet. The game, so the public was told, to be released 2007.
Development status february 2007 (FAQ): The game is currently in early development, and no playable version has been released yet.

Don't trust your feelings lukes. May instead the FORCE be rational with you.

They do promise the goodies though. But you already gave responses on that.

Blood.

in contrast to Elite 4, Infinity is not considered vapourware, and has a huge load of screenshots and very open development updates, so you can follow the process daily. The actual engine appears very mature to me. Whether it'll be done in 2007 I'm not sure about.. because some proposed gameplay elements are complicated and ambitious.
I hope 2008 though.

I tried the combat alpha demo or whatever thing to infinity and it seems to play ok. If they manage to do everything they say then this will be a very nice game,Possibly the closest thing to elite! IMO.

uhhh .. I like this Idea ... can you remember the game Paradroid something ? Where you have to overtake a Robot being faster them him making connections .. big damage = more connections/difficulty given :)
maybe then a Job for R2D2 :)

anyway, as I said once already .. mini Games, even just a Texas Holdem poker on a special Casino-station would be fantastic for xtra entertainment ..

...
back to Topic, I've seen Infinity already and yep, it looks GREAT
I as well come back from time to time to check things in Frontier Devs... wont give up my hope

no Game is lasting for long but some have a spark of what I would like to have in Elite as well .. hmmmmm.. Elite is always popping up in mind ... am I addicted ?

:)

always happy to read some new postings here

The estimate of late 2007 was given before the decision was made to release a combat prototype. The release of the public prototype has but back the development of the game itself by about six months. The prototype is definitely worth checking out, nice graphics and well balanced dogfighting with newtonian physics.
