Information on piracy please....

I had assumed piracy had been delt with as in... if all a CMDR wanted to do was kill, rob and run amuck there had been certain local's in the galaxy set aside where this could be accomplished, not within the general pop... any longer at any rate. I guess I'm mistaken.

Yesterday my fully laden lightly armed/armored and slow transport was destroyed while participating in a "Community Goal" project for ITO Station in RHEA System. I suppose folks with no backbone for an honest battle take advantage, more often than not, of this circumstance and it leaves me wondering why CMDR's even bother to join in the effort considering the vessel(s) that are required to even make a dent in needed supplies for a CG mission.

I fully expect to be interdicted, this is why the ships I fly (not taking part in a CG) are well armed and armored. While I do enjoy an occasional dog fight as much as the next POE pilot this was not a battle but piracy or maybe just plain target practice.

I've played this game for 10 years and have lost dogfights, bottomed out on hi-G planets and gotten too close to stars etc...etc... but I have not committed piracy.

This is my second attempt to whine about this...my first post was canned by the mod's likely for partially naming and thus shaming the CMDR who done it (which I gleaned from the official report of my demise) and calling him out to play in a fair battle...one I might very well lose but at least my blind side won't sting. Well, we'll see if this one posts:oops:

Zig Zag

1) It wasn't piracy; Piracy is where they try to take your cargo. Just sending you to the rebuy screen isn't robbery.
2) What causes decline in the population of "CG campers" (to avoid conflating different groups with poorly defined umbrella terms) is depriving them of 'content' (ie, ourselves) generally accomplished by Solo, PG or Block.

The way ED is constructed, it's dead simple to enjoy your pastime:

- If you feel competent (and in a mood / situation for it), fly finely armed and armored ship and do whatever you want. Enjoy everything the Open can throw your way.

- If you're doing something particular that needs a huuuge cargo ship maxed out for efficient trucking (by definition not armed/armored for efficiency), or going out in the black and returning from months of exploration in a glass ship, do it Solo/Group.

That's all there's to it.

Felix was obviously inferring the piracy wasn't the reason. It doesn't matter if scraps were collected after.

Play in open, this will happen sooner or later. Some people enjoy vaporizing defenseless players. They have just as much a right to their enjoyment as you do.

There are several piratical groups, they'll either demand you release cargo to them (at gunpoint) or hatchbreak you.
The Cmdr that attacked you likely didn't have a cargo rack. Mats are meaningless in this scenario.

You don't get cargo from blown up ships. Pretty sure players don't drop mats either.
You are correct. No mats, and no crago for a destroyed player ship unless jettisoned prior to ship death. Piracy against other players is pretty difficult. You blow them up, you get nothing. They self destruct, you get nothing. They menu log, you get nothing. If they don't play along, you maybe get a couple tons via hatch breaker before they log or self destruct. More often than not, you get nothing.
What we tend to get at CGs is not piracy. For the most part it's just plain old "ship go boom" for the lulz. There are some actual pirates out there, it's just that there are more just there to blow stuff up.

Why on earth would you when that slot could be given to a heavy duty/deep plating HRP or module reinforcements in case they accidentally interdict someone with weapons?!?!!?!?!?

Hire Kumo Crew! 🏴‍☠️

This is something that I’d really like to see FDev make some changes to make a much more viable proposition. The most obvious issue, to me, is that the price of delivering the massive amounts of goods required by something like the recent CG has to be comparable to what a player could net doing other lucrative game loops like exobiology or certain mining. Think of it as competition for where and how I spend my time.

To draw a real-worldish comparison, nobody expects an 18-wheeler cargo truck to be weaponized and armored when driving through Kansas or Sweden, and prices of shipping there reflect that. (I’m ignoring that there are effective police forces in those areas because it’s pretty clear FDev will never create an effective police force or consequences for undesirable behavior in this game).

Deliveries in war zones or Mozambique, on the other hand, have significantly higher costs because the shipping company has to factor in the cost of hiring private military security, shipping fewer tons per vehicle because they have to be armored, etc.

I would love to hire the Kumo Crew to escort me, but I’m going to have to pay those players something that makes it worth their time compared to other things they could be doing. And when a full T-9 load only nets a couple of million, that means I’m going to have to pay a lot of money out of my own pocket. That might work once (if, for example, I think it’s worth several hundred million or more to get that CG reward) but it’s not sustainable.

Ultimately, the answer lies with FDev. System Security levels need to mean something. Prices need to reflect the actual risk level and cost of delivering goods, including griefing behavior by players. If I could hire an NPC force with hyper-engineered ships and enough skill to actually be a deterrent to the griefers, I would nearly always have a protective detail with me.

But I don’t think any of this will happen. When people continue to defend the behavior of the griefers, when FDev clearly has no interest in dealing with them via mechanics or ToS, then I’m just going to continue to avoid Open for nearly all things. I’m not willing to be content for some jackhole who can only derive pleasure by causing others pain.

If Kumo Crew or another group become the security equivalent of the Fuel Rats, then maybe the needle will move a bit (though I understand And respect why that wouldn’t make sense for the Crew). Until that day, though, I will continue to play with the amazingly effective cloaking device FDev provided me and smile while having my thumb on the scale by being unkillable.

I’m sorry… is there a way to pay other players?

I mean, not buy a bunch of commodity, have them follow you out and then give it to them with the station taking a % both when you buy and they sell.
But like, actually pay another player.

Traditionally they request you drop cargo, though for an escort it might be that they set up a carrier to carry out transactions.
If winged they would get a dividend.
