Elite / Frontier Information Requested: FFE

Hello everyone! I maybe be one of the few, who's had never played or heard of the Elite titles until about a year ago when I discovered Oolite. After trying out numerous sims, and other space titles, I always came back to Oolite. Now that I have the time, I'm digging into the shareware version of FFE. In my meanderings, I've come across numerous helpful sites, and information, but still had a few questions. Remember, I'm new, so take it easy!

First, my current setup is GLFFE. I strongly detest the D3d graphics version of FFE, due to constant graphical issues(I.e. I couldn't get icons to appear, full screen had the mouse issue, which Steve's fix, didn't well fix..), and problems with it on my computer. GLFFE however, runs perfectly. Now for the questions.

1. When discussing FFE, two mods are often talked about. Ansio's and Nic's mod. (Nics mod is here. with Ansio's being on the GLFFE page.) What do these mods do? I havn't found any sort of documentation. I installed Ansio's and was unhappy to find that it made the 124,000 Cobra Mk III I wanted to buy 300,000+ Credits. Also, my Saker, seemed to have lost 50% of its hull. I assume the creator raised prices and ship hitpoints to balance the game? Is Ansio's mod worth it? I was REALLY close to affording that Mk III....

2. When switching to 'combat' mode, it no longer shows your acceleration speed. Why is this? I know that I still accelerate when pressing enter.

3. Good mid-level ships? I hate the Saker's small cargo bay with a passion. I'd like to be able to do trade runs, missions, and small-end military missions. Would a Mk III Cobra be suitable? I like good all around ships, and the Cobra seems the best for the job. Its that, or the Moray or Adder. Basically something that can pack a decent punch, jump a decent distance, and carry a minimum of 15 cargo.

4. Saholia medicine run. February is coming to an end! This mission has been an outright gold mine for credits. Im a little bit worried its, almost a cheat. In one day, if I played for long enough, I could easily afford a new ship. Is this intentional? Are there other ways to gain as much money? Id be really put off if you could afford a brand new Panther in a few days play time. Would hurt the longevity. So how is it? The longevity I mean?

5. I have the shareware version of FFE. What am I missing as opposed to the full version? I have seen screenshots with talking heads. So are the communications actually useful in the full version? Any other differences? (Besides bugs?)

6. Ive become good at combat out of necessity, Titican is a rediculously dangerous system. It took something like ten tries to make my first trade run. Are there indicators on what makes a system pirate ridden? Government type doesn't seem to tell a whole lot like it did in Elite. Also, if anyone remembers how you could 'angle-up' in the original elite, to avoid the space lanes? Is there something similair for FFE?

7. I find the combat computer to be worthless. Is there anything that shows ship type, criminal rating, and a leading crosshair like in Oolite's combat scanner upgrade? (Might not be called that.) I would love to have something like that.

8. Where in the heck do you find military missions anyway? >.>

9. I've never played Frontier Elite 2. (The second game in the series?) What are the major differences? I remember seeing a thread about it on these forums, but a search didn't pull up anything. Many people mention each has their strong suits. Could anyone perhaps reiterate those for me?

10. When is Elite IV com-

Nah, just kidding. :D

Sorry for the massive wall of omgwtfbbq text. Hopefully some of you experienced pilots can help out a new guy. Thanks in advance!

1. IMHO Aniso's Mod ain't worth it. I can see what he was trying to do, but it just didn't work for me.
Nic's Mod cleans up and improves GLFFE. Definitely use it.

2. Dunno

3. Keep playing and find out.

4. Keep playing and find out.

5. You aren't missing anything apart from the videos which were on the CD version.

6. Never thought of "angling up" like in Elite/Oolite. I just meet my enemies head on ;)

7. The combat computer is completely useless. Clicking on a ship while in combat mode should will give you info on that ship, provided you've bought the necessary kit.

8. On the bulletin board in Federal and Imperial systems.

9. In many ways FE2 is the same game as FFE but with fewer features. Folk will argue long and hard about which is better. I prefer FFE but it's just an opinion.

10. January 3250 :p

Thanks Steve! You are such a tease, making me actually play the game! :( I have been enjoying it, but I FIRMLY believe that the combat system is utter-poo-poo. I mean.. awful. I think I read somewhere about 'jousting matches' and I have to agree. Very silly, even if it is realistic.... for a laser toting space game.

Beyond this, your answers where a big help! I downloaded Nic's mod... and noticed my Radar scanner wasn't working. Had me baffled until I downloaded the alternate cockpit for Nic's mod. Very strange. Might be because I turned compatibility mode off. *shrugs*

Thanks for your time!

*EDIT*

I have never had so many problems with a video game in my life. Ever. The radar is still bugged, the 'flag/dots' are completely white. Also, the cross/red blob on the map screen for each planet is no longer there, making it impossible to select a planet. It was working yesterday! I just don't get it. I did nothing, my computer went to sleep, and Ive got this brand new issue. Not only that, but re-installs do the SAME THING. jjffe works fine, but GLFFE does not, even without the Nic's mod.

That shouldn't even be possible.

*EDIT2* Ive determined that the game is having color issues. I cannot fathom why. Tried putting in 256 color mode, and it crashes. The station textures look ******ed and wavy due to the issues. Until I can solve them, I'll give FE2 a try.

Sounds to me like it could be an OpenGL related issue, though I'm far from an expert on these matters.
Might be worth checking that your graphics card can run the version of OpenGL the game requires, checking for updated drivers and running dxdiag. Unless you've already done all those things!

Hi Oneofthelost,

As Steve has given you some info on your other questions, thought I'd try and give you a bit of info on the others.

(For what Its worth...)

It's not a cheat as such, but it shows new players that reading the BBS is a good idea. You can also do the Wiccan ware race at the start of the game as well. you learn about this by reading the journals.

And Steves site is pretty damn good for info as well www.frontierastro.co.uk

5. I have the shareware version of FFE. What am I missing as opposed to the full version? I have seen screenshots with talking heads. So are the communications actually useful in the full version? Any other differences? (Besides bugs?)

I don't think theirs any difference between the two as in the gameplay itself, if there is someone will let you know. The talking heads are from the CD-Rom version, which is a lesson in the non-use of good actors, its very funny, there's a thread on here that discusses it and the "interesting" quirks and ****-ups that are on there. (Sorry Frontier)

7. I find the combat computer to be worthless. Is there anything that shows ship type, criminal rating, and a leading crosshair like in Oolite's combat scanner upgrade? (Might not be called that.) I would love to have something like that.

I can't use it either, never could.

8. Where in the heck do you find military missions anyway? >.>

They are on the BBS. look for Federal Military & Imperial posts depending on what system you are in at the time.

9. I've never played Frontier Elite 2. (The second game in the series?) What are the major differences? I remember seeing a thread about it on these forums, but a search didn't pull up anything. Many people mention each has their strong suits. Could anyone perhaps reiterate those for me?

Download the shareware version and have a play, FE2 is a grapically cleaner version and FFE has more missions and more textured graphice.

10. When is Elite IV com-

Nah, just kidding. :D

Actually thats a very good question ;)

Sorry for the massive wall of omgwtfbbq text. Hopefully some of you experienced pilots can help out a new guy. Thanks in advance!

No problem whatsoever, ;) nice to have a new(ish) member on here not trying to sell steroids etc....

Might be worth checking that your graphics card can run the version of OpenGL the game requires, checking for updated drivers and running dxdiag. Unless you've already done all those things!

I ran an OpenGL thing, and it showed that I have OpenGL 3.1 I'll try updating drivers.

*EDIT* I updated my video drivers with no success on the FFE front.

@ T.J.

Thanks for your answers! Was just curious on a few things. Thanks for the heads up on FrontierAstro, as well as FE2. I'm giving the latter a good look at. While it seems similiar at first glance, I'll need to give it a good playthrough. Thanks for your time!

*EDIT* Dxdiag. Not sure how to read it, but the program showed everything good. :(

Not sure how to upload it, as the forum says its too many charectors.

My own PC doesn't seem to be too keen on OpenGL either, so as such I'm still using JJFFE, which works pretty much perfectly.

I recall that somebody had managed to rip the animated faces from FE2 and convert them so they could be used in FFE - this is a decent-enough tradeoff if you want to actually see faces when you're on the BBS. I no longer have the link, however. A quick websearch will net you JJFFE, however.

I'd either go with vanilla JJFFE or D3DFFE. Missing icons are resolution dependent issue - try different resolutions until you find one that works.

GLFFE uses original content but displays it at higher resolution leading to all kinds of visual badness, especially given how much did the original game relied on resolution specific LOD algorithms - 1 pixel wide line at 1024x768 is not quite the same as the same 1 pixel wide line at 320x240, similarly planet models are coded to be replaced by coronas when their would match their size at 320x240, which leads to clearly visible planets abruptly becoming barely visible dots, etc., so if you want fresh graphics, you'd do best using D3D version, if you prefer more of a vanilla looks, go with JJFFE, GLFFE provides neither.

I never bothered with mods, but I wouldn't use them on a game in progress.

You can cycle between auto, manual and unfortunately misnamed engines-off modes by clicking the engine plumes icon on the console on your left. The speed displayed is not "acceleration", but set speed and a unique feature of manual mode indicating what velocity you desire your ship to have in axis, relative to current FoR.

Engines-off mode merely disables all automatics and gives you direct control over thrusters which fire if you hold the appropriate key and stop firing if you release - this mode is necessary for precise manoeuvres and deep space combat and activates automatically during attack - attempting to adjust velocity relative to FoR when you already hurtle at several thousand km/s would yield some erratic behaviour.

Since in engines-off mode there is no set speed, displaying it would be confusing and meaningless.

Cobra Mk.III is an excellent multirole ship, so is Asp. If you don't plan on high volume trading, and prefer fast, manoeuvrable ships, you may even not wish to upgrade any further - bigger isn't necessary better.

Ad. 4.
Well, people still play the damn game after 15 years after its release - draw your own conclusions. :p

Ad. 6.
Government type is an indicator, so is population size.
There are no space lanes in FFE (nor FE2), ships exit hyperspace at random points about 10AU (1,500,000,000km) from system's centre, then fly to their ports of destination. Pirates do actual intercepts, which are possible to do in game (but more in FE2 as it marks ships on system maps).

Ad.7.
It is, unless you have a really small ship and can't fit necessary sensor equipment. What you want is a radar mapper.

Bulletin boards in Federation/Empire aligned systems.

Cleaner, but somewhat worse graphics, cool looking clouds, less bugs, worse AI, less missions including no handcoded ones, less ships and equipment, no journals, no terrain elevation on planets, and no automatic switching to engines-off in combat (you have to do it manually). Also, no manoeuvre assist in engines off mode, which is actually much better than getting stuck with it in FFE.

I FIRMLY believe that the combat system is utter-poo-poo. I mean.. awful. I think I read somewhere about 'jousting matches' and I have to agree. Very silly, even if it is realistic.... for a laser toting space game.
It's not up to you to judge unless you understand it well enough to be able to keep station at less manoeuvrable enemy's six indefinitely. Also to be able to make a cargo/passenger/courier-run with no autopilot.

Seriously, we were all noobs at one point or another, and from personal experience both playing the game and helping other noobs later on I can tell that the combat in FFE is exactly as bad as the pilot is - jousting is one of tell-tale signs of a pilot that just doesn't get it... Yet.

But, to the point:
Help yourself (scroll down).
Good luck!

Well hello! Thanks for the information!

I have been switching between Evochron Legends, Oolite, and Fe2, and have just downloaded FFE again. Mainly because I hate to be beaten by ANYTHING. (I first played elite, and quit after numerous failed docking attempts. I then tried again and again, and literally just sat around learning how to dock. Which is probably what started my sordid affair with the Elite series. :p ) So thanks for that website! I think I've seen it before, but never really looked into that particular section. Bookmarked. The main reason for my grouping of questions is that I don't have alot of time. I generally play one game from each genre that I enjoy. For instance, when I want to shoot things, I play CSS, when I want to hack and slash, I enjoy torchlight or Din's curse. As for space sims. Its hard, each one has flaws in my eyes, and the sheer nature of the genre means that it takes a considerable amount of time to become proficient at ANY sort of space sim. So its often hard to tell what is 'the most rewarding' title I can get my hands on. Plus, with me being rather behind the times, I don't have the benefit of pouring over posts and guides for the games, in fact, apart from a few fansites, there isn't a whole lot of info regarding the Elite series actual gameplay.

Anyway, I am just trying to find out which title would be the most rewarding for the amount of time I can put into it. :p Which is probably all of them, given enough time. Thanks for the reply!

Here's some pics of the problem :

TBH, I'm not much of a fan of the genre, the reason being that it sucks.

I am a big fan of SciFi, and most of the spacesims and space-based games in general just fail at being good SciFi - systems are undersized and crowded with multiple bodies filling skybox, ships move like aircraft, except much slower and without all the intricacies of proper flight model, backgrounds consist of tutti-frutti nebulae, often completely different even in neighbouring systems and other stupidities are abound.

The thing that captivated me in both Frontier games is, that unlike almost the entire genre, they don't suck. Braben worked long and hard crafting rather realistic galaxy (or rather algorithm generating it), with realistic physics, planetary systems, seamless landings, orbital motion and so on, and guess what - it just worked.
Of all the space games I played (or tried to play) Frontier is the only one that is actually convincing, if we discount hardcore simulations of existing/near future craft, like Orbiter.
It also happens to not have any interface problems, which is atypical for the game from that era.

I haven't played Evochron, but the only game I've played that comes close to Frontier would be I-War 2 (Haven't played 1, but from what I've heard it's similar mechanically). It has many cool things like fluff, all the subsystems, market, piracy system, docking ports, remote control, weapon and hardpoint variety, etc. that Frontier doesn't have, but is rendered vastly inferior by terribad interface, AI failing to grasp it's all Newtonian, stupid backgrounds, static systems, inconsistent stealth, dumb autorepair, ugly, non-landable planets, lack of gravity and no time compression. The plot was also rather lukewarm.

Most of the other spacesims, even ones receiving nearly universal praise, like FS2, are the road that is closed for me, as once you grasped Newtonian flight model well enough to use it intuitively, there is no way back, anything else will just pull you out of the game constantly reminding you it's all just a game.

Here's some pics of the problem
But what *is* the problem?

Hmm. I think I see what you mean, but tbh, alot of these kinds of games, are targeted at a rather specific audience. For me, I have never seen an actual nebula, or looked at super-high def photos of the moon, or even bothered to understand actual space physics etc. etc. Its just a game *shrugs*

For instance, the nebulae. I remember seeing some posts about the realistic nebulae in some games. Whereas you look at things like Oolite, and they are EVERYWHERE, big, bright, obnoxious, background fluff meant to make the game beautiful to the eye. Apparently the real thing is very different. However, its not something that I notice, or drags me out.

Its interesting how different audiences view a thing.

I do agree that FFE/FE2 has a fantastic interface, which is really, superior to most modern games. Mr. Braben really knew how to make 'em. :)

Oh! The issue I am referring to is a long standing issue Ive had with the FFE series. I'll start with each version, and use some of those screens has reference.

FFE D3D= The reason I gave up on this version, would be the screenshots found in this thread, on the SSC forum. (Screenname, IronHound.) Basically, the icons don't show up on the cockpit, no matter what cockpit Im using, modded, or regular. I also have the mouse issue where you have to click BELOW the actual buttons. (Wether it be on the stock market, or cockpit interface.)

GLFFE = If you look in the shot above you can see that the radar is whited out, with the 'red bubble' being gone as well. I didn't post a shot, but the planets in the map screen do the same thing, I can't click what planet I want to go to, because all of the red-dots have dissapeared.

JJFFE= I'm no expert on the original, but did the radar have those white flags? Im worried its an issue that is made bigger with GLFFE. Are the radar icons supposed to be white? I just reviewed some screenshots, and it may actually be normal. Ive also not had the issue with the JJFFE version planet wise, so I may play this version.

Those are my issues, or things that scare me. Yes its playable in some parts, but I really like icons so I know what Im clicking. Or being able to see my radar and click my planet destinations. SO far, JJFFE seems to be the only playable version I have, with the white dots being the only issue.

OH! And I wanted to thank you for the Alioth website link. It really opened my eyes to the world of FFE combat. Learning about things like intercepts, and using 'engines-off' (thrusters properly) in combat, has me kicking myself for putting the game down so soon. That is an awesome website for combat, and I'm pouring over it with a fervor. Thanks!

To fix the mouse issue, refer to this post.
As far as the icons are concerned, they work when I set the resolution in the cfg file to 1280x1024. I use ATI Radeon though, not Nvidia.
