I do not understand how the ED:O galaxy map could be made so poor for exploration. I’m not talking about how it looks, the information available or how everything has been moved around and silo’d. I’m talking about base-level functionality. What are the most infuriating aspects, for me, at the moment? Route planning, maintenance and modification. When I’m out exploring I like to fiddle around with my route. I might want to take a detour off of the main route. I might want to fiddle with the star type used to create the route. I might get an itch to pick the pace up and start using supercharging. Doing any of these things is now an exercise in frustration. Why?
Here’s a semi-fictional example of how these issues can all come together to make exploration miserable.
Let’s go on an exploration trip to the Carina nebula. For the initial route I’ll pick a star in or near the nebula and plot. Tick, tick, tick, route plotted. But wait, that seems like a lot of jumps. Let’s look at the route options. Oh, nothing’s checked. NP, I’ll just select “FASTEST ROUTES”. Click… Nothing happens. Ok, so now I need to move the map cursor all the way out to the destination, clear the route, then plot the route again. Ok, that looks better but dat gummit. I forgot to select “JET-CONE BOOST”. Ok, I’ll just select it right now. Click… Nothing happens. Grrr, now I need to move the map cursor all the way out to the destination, clear the route, then plot it again. Ok, now we’re looking good. Off we go.
Now, were well outside the bubble and it’s time to start poking around. That’s a nice looking fuzzy off the beaten path. Let’s set a new route to it. Tick, tick tick, route plotted. Hold on though. That’s waaaay too many jumps. WTH is going on here? Oh, the GD route options are all unchecked again. Ummm… Ok… I’ll select “FASTEST ROUTES”. …AGAIN. Click… Nothing happens. So AGAIN I need to move the map cursor all the way out to the destination, clear the route, then plot the route again. Everything looks good. Off we go.
That was pretty cool. A blue giant and a BH. Time to get back to the main route though. Pick a star in or near the nebula and plo… Hold up. I’m going to make sure the route options are still selected. Oh look. THEY ARE NOT! Good thing I checked before plotting this time. Ok, route plotted and time to get moving again. You know what though? I ran out of fuel on a trip back from Colonia and I don’t ever want that embarrassment again. I’m going to make sure the rest of the trip is scoopable. I’ll select the OBFGKM + NS stars. Select “APPLY FILTER TO ROUTE” aaaaaannnndddd… NOTHING HAPPENS! … NOTHING HAPPENS! NOW I NEED TO MOVE THE MAP CURSOR ALL THE WAY OUT TO THE DESTINATION, CLEAR THE ROUTE, THEN PLOT IT AGAIN!!!!!
Ok, we’re all set to continue but you know what? I’m just going to go to bed and wait for the next patch to come out before I play again.
That story is pretty close to what I put myself through last night and I’m still SMH. I had to get it off my chest and apologize for the rant.
- Route options (eco, fastest, jet cone, etc.) are not persistent. I used to think this was just between game sessions but I’ve since discovered that many times, if not always, they do not persist between jumps.
- Changing route options (eco, fastest, jet cone, etc.) does not automatically re-calculate the route.
- Selecting “Apply Filter to Route” does not re-calculate the route.
There is no simple “recalculate route” button or bind I can find
