INSANELY CLOSE pass of a neutron star!

Hmmm, I wonder if the exclusion zone "collapsed" because you were still in the frame of reference of the star. Things get pretty screwy in Elite when you mix two different frames of reference together.

But a few people have tested this now and confirmed far smaller exclusion zones. In my case I visited a lone Neutron star and observed the same thing, although I didn't get close enough to get forced out of SC, like Orvidius did at Jackson's Lighthouse.

yeah it looks like something that's changed across all neutron stars now. The one where I first saw it after the Sept update just happened to be in a weird situation (really close to its companion star) so I thought it was something unique to that, but apparently not. Which is rather disappointing, tbh. So far there's been no acknowledgement on the Frontier Issues page about whether this is deliberate or not, and several people have pointed out the smaller drop zone distance there now.

It's just really disappointing for me because for years I've wanted to find a planet like Monde de la Mort which swung really close to a neutron star rather than a white dwarf, because we've never seen NS up close before. But they just arbitrarily made this unannounced change across the board in this update and now anyone can see them from up close.

Yeah, I'm torn. On one hand, I was fine with a little danger there. On the other, I've always wanted to get closer for purely selfish (I want to see all the things!) reasons. So I'm ambivalent toward this change.

Now, if this is part of a larger plan, say fueling sources for fleet carriers, for example, then it might be a good thing later. Or maybe they'll turn some of them into Magnetars or something, and you need to get closer to see the difference. But then again, I'm sure this is all wishful thinking. ;) :D

I does make me very curious though I must say. I wonder just how close I could get... The question is whether it's possible to get close enough to actually see the neutron star as a sphere... like what you can see when looking at that white dwarf from the World of Death - well, at least somewhat.

Whether this is possible depends on the heat and also on the shape of the jet cone when close to the star I guess... maybe.

I think I'm okay with it. They're neat objects and I like my ship trusting me to manage how close we get. Plus, it's a slight buff to travel speed, which (one can dream) could tamp down some of the recent whinging for even longer jump ranges.

I would definitely support making them a little more dangerous though. For instance significantly increase the heat and buffeting when closer than the old drop out distance.

you'd have to get within 100 km to see it as a sphere - seems unlikely, unless anyone wants to try flying there with thrusters after dropping out around 800 km (it seemed like it'd take about 30 mins to get there that way but I didn't want to risk it)
