Installing Elite Dangerous on different Harddrive

Hi,

Currently, Elite Dangerous is installed onto my C Drive but with the new update, this drive is going to be full (in the reds).
What I have done:
Uninstalling all parts the game, uninstalling the launcher.
Downloading the launcher onto a different drive. Installing the game from there.
Problem: Even though the launcher is on the different drive, it persists to installing the game onto the C drive.
What can I do? besides buying a new HD replacing the current drive or buying a new computer off course...

Many have installed ED in different PC folders and with multiple accounts have separated them so they can play both at the same time. Look again when installing ED as you may be missing an option. Playing ED I often miss the forest looking too closely at the trees.

May I suggest save all your ED files on the C: drive and the username/app data/frontier files then install a dedicated SSD drive to play. Install it from scratch then drop in your bindings.

Regards

When it’s not I installed, select it, then go to Options at the top of the launcher and installation location will be available.
I think you may have fixed my issue. If this works I will help spread the word. I have tried everything from deleting all traces of the game to uninstalling and deleting the launcher and nothing has worked. I may have to do another wipe first but I never thought to check options before installing. RIght now I see the option to choose installation directrory on elite and Horizon install but not odyssey. I am currently attempting to install elite to the file location I chose and I am hoping that once elite installs there that Odyssey will select that as its install location also even though Odyssey currently doesn't show the option to choose a directory location.

So far it has added a new folder elite-dangerous-64 to my K: drive which is the drive that I want it on.

I couldn’t even find where it installed Odyssey it wasn’t where I installed Horizon and it wasn’t on C so no that won’t work. I uninstalled it and put with my Horizon install by doing it this way.

Yes, it worked. I basically uninstalled everything, Then reinstalled the launcher selecting my K: drive. Then once the launcher had installed I selected Elite Dangerous and then went to the options tab in the launcher and selected the option to change the install location. I then installed Elite Dangerous and after it was done I installed Odyssey. Now my K drive shows frontier/elite-dangerous-64 which is 19.5 gigs and EDLaunch in the same folder on my K: drive that is 52 gigs. My C: drive only has like 100MB in the Frontier_Developemnt folder

Yeah I keep the Launcher in the default install location (C) and instll the games on my game NVME. My Launcher folder is only 51MB

Not ideal but you could try creating a Junction for the install directory. Think of it as a bit like a folder shortcut. I use it to "move" the default ED Screenshots folder amongst other non ED related stuff.

Couple of apps that might make it easier -

Junction Link Magic

Link Shell Extension <-- I use this one personally

Or do it manually:
Copy the Elite Dangerous 64 folder from your C: drive location to where you want, say G:\Games\ED for example.
Delete the original folder from C:.
Open a cmd prompt/powershell in admin mode.
Then type - mklink /J “C:\path\to\original\ED\folder” “G:\Games\ED\Elite Dangerous 64”
Make sure you point it to the folder where you want it, not to the original folder; so to "C:\path\to\original\ED\folder" not "C:\path\to\original\ED\folder\Elite Dangerous 64"

Note - I've not tried this with ED (but use it a lot with other games without issue), so I don't have proof it will work; it should, no reason it shouldn't and it's easy enough to copy the folder back to it's original location if it doesn't. I take no responsibility if it doesn't work, messes something up etc etc.
