Instancing by Combat Rating

.... also, Explorers and Traders would do well to never fire a shot - thus reducing their chances of encountering anyone who had combat rank greater than Harmless....

The problem with this suggestion is that matchmaking a group of players falls apart for those who are far away from the mean rank. As you rise in combat rank you will experience varying degrees of match making success, even with a perfect system that always connects players successfully. This would lead to all sorts of awkward things happening, like high ranked players not seeing anyone in starter systems, or liw ranked players only seeing other players in starter systems. You could relax the match making rules, but the effect wont go away.

Well for starters, I've reset one of my accounts three times and have 2,000+ hours in-game. According to the combat rating I'm "Novice" yet woe unto to the CMDR who thinks he's taking out a noob. :D

No need for this. Lot's of other issues to focus on.

Not every encounter is combat related. It wouldn't go down too well with co-operative groups like the Hutton Truckers that do crazy things like loading large trade ships with rares from outposts. It would also impact on the various racing groups in game. Worse still it would make the galaxy seem even emptier of players than it currently is ( and trust me you don't need to go far off the beaten track to barely see anyone else as it stands)

You said it would add a layer to instancing and that was a bad thing. Instancing was "difficult" enough as it was. Now, I may have read it wrong but making something worse means it's a bad idea in my book. You didn't say "good idea but I wish they'd sort out the buggy instancing before adding features".

I agree combat ranking isn't perfect but it'd be something. I even say this in the OP.

How would people cheat MMR? Wouldn't a high ranking be a badge of pride? You don't see people in LoL deliberately lowering their rank so they can fight newbies....

Hack the server to change their MMR?

RE: Helping newbies - good point but they can always play in group where such restrictions might be relaxed. Not sure though. I will think about it and see if I can come up with something better!

Ah - wings. Will add it to the main post. People of any rank can wing together, which is kind of implied but not explicitly mentioned in the OP. Still will think about it some more.

How? A lower ranked player wouldn't even see a higher ranked and vis-versa, how would they be able to wing together?

I assume by adding people from a list of those in the same system, irrespective of level or something and then jumping? Might help with some of the existing wing-making problems too.

People who actually care about their PvP prestige won't do this, but as we have seen, quite a lot of people likes to blow people up for the fun of it and enjoy destroying under-equipped ships and inexperienced pilots.

The concept of MMR is something that changes with one's performance, it isn't unthinkable for someone to intentionally perform badly or do this with friends to intentionally lower their MMR, any experienced player in any game with MMR will tell you the same.

Yes but you get that in any game with MR. Just like in ED I can buy a sidewinder, sell everything in it barring the essentials and then get blown up to make all my bounties go dormant.... and even remove the bounties if I get scanned by a bounty hunter. No one is suggesting we get rid of the bounty system...

Plus ... those people get to gank newbies in the current game without all that effort. At least this makes them work a bit for it.

It maybe seem a bit poor but I like to follow Sun Tzu for my fighting

in war the victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory.

In other words I fight if I know I can win if I'm not sure of victory I run away. So I prefer we have an entirely random selection of ships interdicting us - and I choose my fights
