Instancing or (Instances) ...what is it? Does ED use it? Does it work with wings?

Hi all,

Just a few quick questions about Instances in elite dangerous:

  1. What is Instances?
  2. How should it work?
  3. Does it work In elite Dangerous?
  4. Does it work with Wings?

Thanks for any information shared on this topic, instancing is new to me.

:S

Instances are the current area around your ship that you experience. Every player has his or her own instance, and they can be merged into each other.

Think of it like being in a lift or elevator. As it goes up and down, people will come and go. If you ride the elevator all day, you will see people enter your instance, share some time with you, and then leave into their own instances as they leave yours.

1. Instances can be described as 'different things happening in the same place at the same time'. Think of a hallway lined with doors that each go to the same room, and depending on the door used you will see different things happing in the room. This way you can have 100 players in a system, but only see the ones who came 'in the same door' as you.
2. It should be a seamless transition through the doors when jumping in or out of hyperspace to the room.
3. It often makes people go through doors to rooms that do not contain friends or wings mates, but this is a known issue and they are working on it, otherwise it allows up to 32 players into a single room. (Ive only seen 12 or so at the most).
4. Wings is the best way to insure everyone ends up going through the right door into the same room.
Hope it helped.

These explanations are all very helpful. I've read that the issues with RES not having higher level NPCs is an instancing problem. Since instancing seems to be related to a player's experience, why would instancing affect the NPCs that you see? In other words, why don't all instances in a High Intensity RES have randomly generated high level NPCs?

Its probably the same reasons every mob in WoW doesn't drop Epic loot, although I would like to see this done more intuitively, perhaps to match spawns with the types of ship or skill of player which create the instance originally.

Someone wrote a pretty good description here: http://lavewiki.com/network

Wow! I had no idea. thanks seems like the most used definition for all and it seems everyone so far agree's with this answer for the most part. Thanks.

I hope FD is working on how well instancing works in ED especially for Wings and wingmates. Didn't seem to work very well yesterday.

One more Question then:

If you are winged up with wing mates and do not see your wing mates, what do you do to try to see them or be in the same instance with them? (Looking for the best solution until it is fixed).

Jump out, jump in.

Instancing doesn't work very well and the alleged max limit of 32 is a joke. Even people in the same wing can't see each other from time to time or you can see your wingmates firing at someone, but you can't see their target.

This cmdr pinged me and said,
"Fancy some pvp to shields down?"
So I said, yes, lock onto me as a wing and pull me out of supercruise.
Needless to say we were in different instances.
Bit of a problem really (the only time I actively encouraged some pain and didn't get any).

32 is plenty for the vast majority of consumer-grade internet connections and the land-fill gateways ISP's give out for free. Have you configured your connection to work best with Elite? Have all your friends done so too?
