Instant diseases in Challenge Mode

I'm so tired of the first dinosaur or two I release becoming sick the moment they step out of the Hatchery, especially on Jurassic Difficulty where I don't have and can't afford a Ranger Station that early and it's a guaranteed game over scenario. Can diseases be adjusted so that they don't start occurring until the first Star is reached, like how storms and twisters work?

Hand on.... how long does it take for you to release your first dinosaur? It should be getting a disease 30 minutes in.

In the first 5-10 minutes depending on how long it takes to complete the genome. And I've had the first dinosaur I release get diseased the instant the releasing cinematic happens, it hasn't even stepped out of the hatchery and it's already sick.

Wow... that sounds like horribly, rotten, tragic luck. I used to only play Challenge Mode, with an emphasis on Jurassic Difficulty, but I've never had disease that bad. I do admit, that I've gotten disease with dino's being released (and worse, being transported. They become floating typhoid Mary's that can't be cured) but never for my first dino. Perhaps this is a bug that has was added?

I do like your idea about preventing disease at first for certain difficulties. That would even make it a snap for people to get five stars on their Jurassic challenges since they could leave the game running for hours to rake in money before that first star. Somehow, I don't think that will happen.

Based off of your comment that you don't have the money for a Ranger Station by the time the outbreak starts, I think you may already be in a game over scenario. In Jurassic Challenge Mode, contracts regularly kill my runs before they even start. Due to the horrible contract system, it's not uncommon to get some sort of horrible rubbish like "achieve 1 star in dino rating" from your first couple of contracts or "release/sell a (modified/plain) X number of dinos". If these happen, then you may be facing a hard time because they seriously disrupt your cash flow. Here's a few tips on starting out your challenge mode.

1. Consider restarting your challenge mode until all three of your starting contracts are easily obtainable. Stuff like preform an expedition, build a hammond creation lab, build a fossil center, etc are all great candidates for a good start.

2. Depending on your patience level (I usually have a paleontology book present when starting my runs) you may want to consider save scumming for subsequent contracts after you complete the first. By this, I mean save the game before accepting any new contracts (If this is odious to you, proceed to tip (3)). If the contract is bad, or hard to do, then reload before you obtained the bad contract. Doing this prevents you from getting pure rubbish like have dinosaur X fight dinosaur Y because those are huge wastes of time, money, and resources with no real gain. Sometimes the save scum method takes a while because there are so many rubbish contracts in this game. This is why I have a book.

3. Don't be afraid to cancel rubbish contracts. Especially if option (2) doesn't work for you. Keeping your cash flow coming is essential for your first stars; otherwise, you will end up in a game over scenario. Typically cancelling contracts isn't too detrimental to your cash flow unless they are exceptionally crappy ( I had one that was have Chrictonsaurs kill a T-Rex in combat. It would have cost me 3 million to cancel and 4 million to complete. Utter garbage!).

4. Only build shelters and storm protection centers when there's a contract to do so then demolish them right after. Doing this will continually net you increased cash revenue because the contract rewards and the return from demolishing the building are always more then the cost of building it in the first place. Plus, it puts these easy cash grab contracts back into the system to come up again.

5. Never ever ever breed aggressive dinosaurs. They may be tempting for their star point value, but they typically cost a ton, and will continue to cost a ton when they repeatedly break out of their enclosures and go on a rampage. Stick to they incredibly mild mannered dinosaurs. Especially sauropods! They are great points, easy to maintain and surprisingly not expensive compared to other dinosaurs of equal rating. They also have the benefit of being so slow that even if a twister destroys every single fence, you can probably repair all of them before they even think about escaping.

Hopefully doing any of the above will help your Challenge mode problem. I find Challenge mode to a be a fun and rewarding experience where I often get more time to spend tweaking my enclosures and viewing my dinosaurs than I normally do in the campaign.

Good luck!
