Why did this happen about two minutes after I accepted the mission?

The time limits on those are extremely short. You pretty much have to attend them immediately.
It's the same system, a few Ls away - it failed as soon as I left the station (which was as soon as I got the mission and ran back to the ship). Didn't even allow time to get up into Supercruise.
I assume it's bugged.
Check either your mission panel (left HUD) or your logfile (somewhere on your HDD, presumably in the saved games folder - but easier to read though e.g. EDDiscovery).

Errmmm... Oh. All I can say is that it was fuller once.
The lack of info about why it fails is irksome.
You have about 8 minutes to get there from the moment you accept, if it failed sooner then it was bugged somehow.
