Sorry if it's already someone else's idea, I really don't have the time to read each one of the forum threads.
The 3D printing idea really does not make much sense. Why would my original ship disappear ? Is it some kind of Tron disintegrator which would send the atoms through hyperspace and reconstruct my ship 300Ly away ? Everyone seems to deem it a bit unrealistic, even in a world where everyone travels across the galaxy.
I think it would be much more lore-friendly to implement a sort of ship brokers network, and replace the instant travel with a remote selling/local buying mechanic. You would of course sell at a greater loss than if done locally.
The ship brokers could be able to provide the 'new' ship/parts even if not for sale, because they're... brokers. That's their job [smile]. It could also open possibilities of sourcing high-end modules for a price, leaving one with the choice to travel to a High Tech system one your own, or request the services of the broker.
So, what do you think ?
