Instead of the engineer grind, why cant we have good missions leading up to upgrades?

Why has FD fallen for the online gaming grind a'la WoW to get better loot?

Why cant we have meaningful missions from the engineers working our way to upgrades?
Something that is fun and rewarding and does not only involve search and grind for materials?

It could be like story archs, and the final upgrade could be like a boss to defeat in order to get the necessary components.

Because the people who shout the loudest are the people who just want the simplest, quickest, most straightforward means of obtaining upgrades so they can get straight back to using their upgraded ships for pew-pew or farming the latest gold-rush.

*EDIT*

The irony is, Sandro seems keen on the whole "progression" thing and offering upgrades as rewards for, perhaps, completing a series of missions would provide that but I guess he's not keen enough to develop any new immersive content.

I like Super Mario Bros. well enough too, but coin collecting for 1ups isn't really my thing in this game.

Themed missions was suggested by many earlier on (myself included) as an alternative progression method with the Engineers before they were introduced in the first place, but it apparently isn't something Frontier could viably implement.

I like the module progression with these changes much more than the craft and trash methods and roulette wheel spins of the old (current) mechanics. So, it's still an improvement in my opinion.

Kind of a shame newer players won't be able to sell exploration data to gain access to tier 5 FSD mods straight away like we were able to, but I guess you take the bad with the good.

the same people which fill bug reports after been boiled in between 2 stars cause lag of pilot skills
and right after its fixed, they complain about them boring travelling and ask for AI pilots

Well I found engineers a much more enjoyable experience then the current method in the beta. I like having the clear improvements. Also the the five G5 FSD enhances range rolls I did on my icourier which only got me a 32% increase probably would have gotten me a 45% increase in the new system. So for me, a much better experience.

I hated the Russian roulette of before. This is much better in my view.

I totally understand OP.

The more the game evolves the more I see it is not the kind of game I like to play. It is a game about collecting stones, trade stones for more stones and the goal is to get the best statistics for your ship wiht all the stones you've collected.

I'd prefer good story, missions, multiplayer gameplay.

Sorry to say, but I am out of this beta. Really disappointed about Engineers and Crime & Punishment and the Wing Missions too. It's not very promising.

I am out. Got to cool down, drink some tea. This is infuriating. But it's for free. I'll have to rember this. We didn't have to pay for this at least.

EDIT: ok, now I am level headed again I see I was not totally fair. The beyond beta 1 isn't that bad. Actually it has some pretty nice content. Trading enhancements are pretty neet - also crime & punishment IS promising - some finetuning needed, but on a good way imo. And engineering, well I think I will have to cope with the new grind.. it ain't much different to the old system in the end... maybe I was overacting.

Should have watched some reviews about this game...Elite has NEVER been about storylines, it's a complete open-ended game with no goals except for the ones you set yourself. My goal has never been to grind materials for 1000 hours to I can be 5% better than someone else.

Waaay back, pre 2.2, there was talk from FD about doing engineer missions. But it didn't get past the cutting room floor as i understand.

Yeah, I remember them saying something along the lines of it being too difficult to implement with their then current development time and resources.

I think they like having some use for these material resources, it fitting a general approach with them being implemented in the game. Probably the same reason my SRV doesn't recharge/refuel when I get back on my ship.

Every time this gets suggested, it's a brilliant idea. And yet it's always ignored.
Look at the tutorials, where a lady finds you drifting and helps you get your ship back online, with each follow up being related. She refers to your previous meet and says your going to dock/go bounty hunting this time.

So much potential for interesting missions that would lock upgrades behind skill instead of time sink.

FDev are very good at adding a base for something with heaps of potential, saying they'll flesh it out and then just dropping it like a led balloon. PP, CQC, SP Ranks. Real shame because all could be heavily improved without too much imagination, all were said to improve over time and have jut been left to stagnate.

We all have potential but if we never realise it, then we are actually just what we are, and not what we could be.

What, you want real content?

Given what I've seen from this development team, I'd have to guess that either they don't have the skills required, or are just doing minimal effort here to get by and concentrating their resources on other games.

The graphics and sound crews do seem to have their stuff in one bag though. Love the new planet skins and the sounds of the new ship! :D

Coin-collecting? C'mon, we know better... you're this guy:

Fdev have more people working on ED than ever so this is why we got this really deep and meaningful content update to Eng's...

That everyone a) said no to in the "feedback forums" and b) seems to be an even bigger grind now but standardises every ship now.

yes some kind of stuff like, "Want your improved shields vs thermal?" "Well pay me 30k credits for the work and gather some 'data' by getting a total of 20k shield health shot by energy damage and come back, if you survive it". Then you can go off seeking some baddies for you or annoy some systems ecurity to get the shots for your shields.

that would be kinda more fun and immersive. Still feels a bit mroe sciency than engierring.

Or sneaking into a station or connecting to a terminal exterior of it to hack it. There's so many opportunities for missions and things to put in the game and yet FDev have chosen to ignore all of those and give us rubbish instead.
