Insufficient genetic diversity.

How is this calculated? Sometimes I can go 300m and it's fine. Other times, I can drive for about a kilometer and I still get the message.

Any ideas?

It's documented in the codex entry for the bio in question..

When you scan it with composition scanner (in ship or SRV) you'll see "press [some key, maybe F7] for more information" or something like that. You may have to scan it twice to see this if it's a new discovery for you. Press the key and it will take you to the codex page.

Otherwise: right-hand panel, codex, middle panel, look for geological/biological, find your bio, and the colony range should be in there somewhere. It's easier to composition scan and press the key if you can.

I think Electricae and Tubus have the largest range at 1km. Osseus are 800m, Bacteria and Stratum at 500m (Also fonticulua?) Fungoida are 300m, Tussock 200m, and others are mostly less than that (I've probably forgotten a few!)

Depending on species the range to sample can be from 100m to 1000m, there are none above 1000m and none below 100m, as mentioned there are resources that will tell you exactly how far you need to go for each species. All variants of a particular species will also have the same distance requirement, so once you get to know them it's really easy anyway.
