I just did a mission that gave me 4 Insulating Membrane. I know its a commodity but are they needed for any engineering? Can't find anything online.

Keep it ... you won't lose it, even if shot down, because it is a material rather than cargo.
You may require it later for an engineering mod. Just hang on to it - who knows how useful it might be?

The thing is it's actually in my cargo and takes up 4 units of space out of 64. It's not in my materials list which I know isn't lost upon destruction.
