Insurance : alternative to starting (again) with the Sidewinder

Lately the number of desperate cmdr who have lost everything because of the current insurance system made me think it could be possible to allow people to get in debt instead of starting from scratch.

The insurance for a python is roughly 3 million credits.

If you are destroyed and you can't pay the insurance... you can still get your python for 3 millions.

Only you will have negative assets. It might seems softcore compared to starting from scratch. But wait...

If you don't make this money back fast, interests rack up. And after some time, if you still owe money, it becomes a bounty.

 I pity the fool who still have not paid back Jabba by the end of the week.

Of course, you still have the option to accept the sidewinder.

I do like the idea of been able to rack up a huge dept that becomes a bounty, this could also be the case if you fail a mission for one of the more ethically questionable factions. In the mission screen it could not say how much fine you'd get for failing some of the bigger missions and then BANG you end up with a huge bounty on your head. Lets see what the missions in 1.3 are like, who knows, we may get something like this

Yeah, but this would punish casual players who only play for an hour or two each night (compared to people who can, say, play for 10 hours straight right after their Python goes boom and pay off the debt before much interest racks up).

Nope, current system is good enough.

All these insurance gamblers should be greatful that I'm not in charge because I'd force everyone into open ironman and auto-ban combat loggers.

Idk it seems too easy, you get a bounty, so what? I have had a bounty since game release it's not that challenging. The cops are laughable. Unless they are made intentionally impossible to escape/beat it won't really be a punishment.

The insurance/buyback system is not a big dark secret. Most will die at least once early in their career, and get a nice introduction to the respawn screen. Also, right there on the right hand info-panel in the cockpit, you'll see current balance and rebuy cost. Anyone who chose to ignore it, and fly around in a big expensive ship without making very certain that current balance is greater than rebuy cost are either monumentally stupid or should go to the very next meeting of their local Gamblers Anonymous.

Working fine as is - though all potential Gamblers Anonymous candidates will at least partially get their wishes fulfilled with the next patch, as then the loan will scale with some rank or other (if I remember correctly).

That doesn't make sense. Why would you buy a python and fly it without having enough for insurance? The smarter option would to be to fly around in a vulture or imperial clipper or Fer DE Lance with over 5 insurances buys in your pocket.

Join the Empire! Become a slave and work off that debt for the Senator!

There's your "unique" solution to bankruptcy and debt.

I don't think debt can become a bounty in a meaningful way because destroying the ship you loaned out isn't good business sense. It generates money that doesn't otherwise exist, and could easily be exploited by people who exploit things.

As for the loan, I think there's a lone already, but there's no reason to loan a guy 3 million just because he HAD a ship, and it wouldn't be fair for the Sidewinder guy who's trying to climb the build ladder to give a new Python to a guy who was just too foolish with CR to protect his investments. It would reward bad decisions. Sure you'd pay it back, but the game doesn't need the CR. What's important is that the immersion into the game remains as solid as possible without the arcade reset button concept.

Currently you can get loan for maximum 600k credits to cover for your insurance, in case you do not have enough in your balance (IIRC). FD has stated that the loan amount will be increased in the upcoming patch in accordance to your rank.

Definitely agree, current system is 'good'.
Although it could be argued the current system is 'bad' if you're an idiot.

The best only excuse for falling foul of insurance is early game ignorance of the re-buy process. In these cases the solution is the loan.
After that if you can't work out the consequence of not affording the re-buy maybe this game isn't for you.

1.3 brings with it higher rebuy loans depending on your combat rank, so if you're rubbish at thinking through your decisions, the game won't penalise you so greatly.

It should be painful when you die. I've made a few stupid errors. If you buy a ship too early and don't have the spare funds it really is you making that risk and you should be punished. Just as I was. ;) The current system works ! Its not that hard to make a few million.

Current model is very lenient. Why change a game to cater for a few idiots. I cant see why people cannot just accept the game as is.

Its already easy, don't fly without insurance because of impatience.

Creating debt that is inconsequential (its not real and as no impact on you personalty) is a waste of time.

Make common sense your friend and walk before you run, slow and easy wins the race.

They should make it more like real Life,
if you don't have the insurance cover, the Police can stop you give you a fine (And 6pts) and impound you ship which you have to pay extortionate storage costs on per day until you can get it back or it is crushed, plus when you eventually do get a new ship the insurance cost trebles.... :D

I'm being a bit facetious above and having a joke, but it does make you think... :)

ISTM that people miss the absolutely essential point: you lose your ship, not your rankings and not your "hard" skills at flying.

I don't make money very quickly (very little trading) so it would take me a long time to replace the ~150 MCr I have at present - but put me in a stock Sidewinder with nothing and I'll be flying a decently equipped Cobra by the end of the day.
I may even do that as a challenge - it sounds like fun.
