Newcomer / Intro Insurance and new upgrades

Hello fellow CMDRs

so I have made my first million yesterday (hooray) and decided to buy Cobra right away. I kept the starting Sidewinder as a backup (it had upgraded jump drive). I have upgraded few modules in the Cobra and bought new weapons. I still have about 300K credits left... should I keep them?

Now I would like to know how does the insurance work? I was not charged any money if I remember well. Does it come automatically with the purchase? Or will I have to pay it only after the ship will get destroyed? I would like to know beforehand. :D

I have bought gimbaled pulse lasers for the medium slots and gimbaled multi cannons for the small slots... but I'm thinking should't I change it the other way around? I have read that the multi cannons have dmg reduction based on size of ship vs. size of slot.

Thank you for any reply on this matter.

Hello there!

I would indeed recommend filling the small hardpoints with gimballed lasers and the medium hardpoints with gimballed medium multicannons. Use the lasers primarily to engage small targets or bring down the shields of larger ones, and use the multicannons primarily to destroy hull and modules of shieldless targets.

When your ship is destroyed you will be charged a deductible to get it replaced. You can see the rebuy cost in the right hand panel under your bank balance.

Also to my knowledge all class 1 weapons suffer against medium and large ships, while class 2s have a penalty only against large ships. It isn't just multi-cannons.

And how about taking missile launchers instead of the Multicannons? Are they any good?

I will probably test different setups today... if I will not get shot down though. :D

There are a select few weapons that "punch above their league" so to say. Cannons for example. That's not to say that you should mount cannons (they have their disadvantages), but they don't suffer so much from size penalties.

Medium multicannons are the best shot-for-shot weapons for medium hardpoints. Missiles are rubbish if the target still has shield - they do almost no damage to them. They're great once the shields are down (and provided the target doesn't have an ECM).

Cannons, railguns and missiles are all very useful in specific circumstances; multicannon are all-round weapons that give you the greatest combat zone flexibility.

The damage penalty doesn't apply to lasers - it only applies to kinetic weapons.

To see your insurance cost, go to the right panel in your cockpit. The insurance cost should be displayed there. Make sure you have more credits than that cost and should your ship explode, you should have enough to get your ship back.
Word of warning - if you have any bounties or fines on your head, they'll be deducted from your credit balance BEFORE you get a chance to pay your insurance, so make sure you have enough credits to cover that as well.

Do you have any source for that? From my experience it does not seem like that is true.

I guess it would be hard to tell the difference between worse performing lasers due to negative size modifier and the fact that the bigger the ship the better the shield? It would require a definitive statement from the devs in either direction.
Cheers
