Insurance Companies should have more of an impact

Currently the insurance companies have infinite pockets and don't really care much that they are having to payout vast sums of money to replace ships. Obviously things are a little unbalanced because insurance is there as a mechanic to make Elite Dangerous work as a game rather than just a simulation.

It has already been suggested that there should be a mechanism for paying insurance premiums and the ability to insure your cargo.

One idea is to allow the player to pay an insurance premium that reduces the extra amount that they have to pay on ship destruction.

The excess should be linked to the risk too, if you are destroyed in an anarchic system, or in a conflict zone then you should have to pay more excess.

Introduce a no claims bonus!

If you add cargo insurance, that should have an option to cover piracy, someone pulls you over and demands your cargo or face destruction. You obey and then are able to recoup some portion (or all) of the cost. As a balancer to this the insurance company may then issue a bounty on the pirate, these could appear as extra bulletin board missions. Get too much of an insurance bounty and the companies may put pressure on systems to mark them as wanted too.
