Insurance Ideas

Snakebite

With so much, discussion and criticism about the insurance mechanic, i'd like to present my suggestions for debate.

1) Make insurance optional, purchased in advance at shipyards.
2) Have different tiers, so tier 1 may be basic cover (ship only) at say 5%, tier 2 could be comprehensive cover (ship and all equip) at 10%, Tier 3 could be extended cover (ship, equipment, and any cargo) at 15%.
3) Extra premiums should be applied if you have a record for collisions, speeding fines etc... say an extra 1% for speeding fines etc..
3) Give the insurance a time limit, lets say you purchase it for 10 or 100 (game hr) blocks. when it expires you can choose to buy more. either at the same or different tiers.
4) The insurance is only valid for the ship you are flying, if you change ships then you need to insure that ship.
5) Give the insurance exclusions like in real life, so for example it may not be valid at anarchy systems, unless of course you pay an extra 5% for that option on your premium.
6) Allow for insurance discounts, for example corporate systems only insurance may be at a reduced rate.
7) Have a no claims bonus, for careful pilots just as in real life.

Insurance should always be invalid if you are wanted for murder....

Any thoughts...?

Let's make it more true to life and have insurance companies that refuse to pay up because your actions invalidated the policy. Somewhere in the small print "This policy is void if at the time of destruction the policy holder is subject to a bounty in excess of x Cr"

Then we will have all those who accidently shoot a ship and get a bounty then go to dock and get scanned complaining even more about how its all unfair....

I think a simple 24 hours to get the money or bye bye ship would be good.

Nope, no need for time delay... if you don't have the cash on you to cover your insurance excess you should not be able to claim it...

you already have the option of lowering your excess by selecting which upgraded modules you want to rebuy when you are already at the insurance sreen
There are a lot of anarchy systems that get selected as part of the journey on regular route planner runs and so unless we can select NO ANARCHIES in the route planner this wont really be fair or viable
You should be required to keep the insurance excess fee on you and also you should be allowed to sell assets (other stored ships) remotely (at 20% lower than purchase instead of the standard 10%) to cover your insurance excess costs if you wish to

the only part I do agree with is the no claims bonus... reward safe pilots by giving them a lower excess based solely on actual hours played (not just logged in idle but active with either logged in and chatting with other commanders or logged in doing in game tasks (mining, combat, trading etc etc) maybe even rate it on lightyears travelled modified by the number of stations docked at and so forth... so the longer you actively play and the more you dock safely etc and the less overall claims per hour then the lower your insurance excess becomes and only maybe at most a 10% lowering of your actual normal insurance excess (so only ever as much as .5% of the value of the ship)

8) Drill into the players heads that Insurance is only to help out on the first steps and that by the time they bough a cobra or anything bigger, they have more than enough experience to know that they need to have reserve money, in case they want to go with anything more expensive, if not, then the 'learning' concept is just to complicated and they should stop and go back playing with their Lego's.

I really like that idea ^^.

Sadly there is zero chance of it being added, the whiners always get their way and that would cause lots of whining.
