Hardware & Technical Intel Compute Stick

There is a new Intel Compute Stick due to be released in Q4 2015. I'm thinking of getting one of these for taking away on holiday. The idea being to have movies stored on it for the kids and then have access to streaming services.

the new version will run Window 10 with Bing and is powered by a Core M processor. This has an Intel 5300 HD GPU inside.

Anyone have an experience with playing Elite on this GPU?

That probably won't work. Not because of the GPU, but because of the very low powered CPU. The Core M is an Atom-based processor, which is nowhere near what you need for Elite.

It wil probably run, but not too well. I tried it on atom z3740 based tablet, it works, but is far from playable. ~20fps at minimal quality settings and 1280x800 resolution.

If you are capable of receiving streaming services while on holiday, here is an idea.

I currently run moonlight to stream from my nvidia based gfx card (there are amd options but not tried them) to my android device upstairs, minimum for relatively smooth streaming is 5mb. It supports xbox 360 controller and I can play elite just fine with it.
Just a thought but if you were holidaying not too far from home and had access to at least 5mb throughput (ie. your home upstream would need to be at least 5mb as well as the downstream), you can play pretty much most games that are on your comp.

Also supports usb sticks for movies, netflix etc etc.

You sure about the CPU? That link is from an old article. The new Compute Stickwill use the new version. This link shows is on a par with an old i5

ive got Elite running on my kids PC that are running AMD Athalon without any major issues.

its no big issue if it doesn't work as the Compute Stick would be used for those days on holiday when you are stuck inside ... Like when your wife breaks her ankle while on holiday.

Here's the article I ready about the (leaked) new specs of the next version.

Even that Core-M version is with its two 1.1 GHz cores far below ED's minimum requirements of a 2 GHz quad-core CPU.

I currently play on an AMD Athlon x2 64 5600 2.9Ghz Dual Core CPU. GPU is a GTZ 750 ti.

I average maybe 20fps in conflict zones and RES, but everywhere else is atleast 30+FPS.

I have a tablet with a intel bay trail z3735 and 2gb ram. I stuck ED on there just for fun and was surprised to find how playable it was, i even had the hostas t-flight hooked up usb otg.
I was playing solo with min graphics @800x600 between 25-30fps in dock avg 45fps in space, this to me was not enough to 'play' with but if i were out and about and wanted to do a couple of trade runs or check galnet easily sufficient, no combat tho.

And here's the comparison of the HD5300 with a GT425m.

I have a GT425m in an older laptop running a quad core i5 at ~2.4GHz. It gets playable framerates in space at 1368x720 with supersampling set to 0.75 (rendered resolution 1024x583). Stations drop to about 15fps. Its passmark score is getting on for 75% better than that of the HD5300, so despite the improvements in the processor (well caught by the way - I was away with the fairies with that benchmark), I'd still suggest that it would be unplayable for all intents and purposes.

5300 is a big number. You will probably be able to run at 1440p or 4K on medium settings. Or not ;). If it is just for movies or media have you consider TV sticks running Android ? They might end up being a better bargain.

My search started looking at those. However after my wife tried to apply for a job online while on holiday and the hassle of getting a CV (stored on my NAS at home) all from an iPad, I like the idea of a full Windows PC I can carry in my pocket. Playing Elite is note a requirement but it might be nice to squeeze in a couple of trade runs while on holiday :)
