Newcomer / Intro Interdiction Submission to FSD Failure

I've been playing for a month, but this is a new occurrence to me and I figure others can learn from the answers as well:

I was heading back with a load of presents in my hold and got interdicted. As usual I dropped the throttle to zero so I would submit to interdiction and not get the FSD penalty of a failed evasion. (Newbies, this can save your butt)

Anyway, this time, instead of dropping out of supercruise without the FSD penalty I got the message that I submitted and FSD malfunction. Uh oh! I dropped chaff but the first hit took out my thrusters and I couldn't evade. So I got blown up. (I only seem to get interdicted by capital ships lately)

What's the deal with the FSD malfunctioning right out of interdiction submission. Is this a normal occurrence or did I just register a hit from weapons fire that didn't cause an even on my end?

I think you still take some hull/module damage even if you submit, so maybe you just got really unlucky and the small amount of FSD damage happened to cause a malfunction right at that point.

I have never had that happened to me and I always submit even though i don't flee after submitting, I just turn around and kill those anoying NPCs. So i guess it could also be a bug of some kind....

"FSD MALFUNCTION" means you lost the interdiction. When you submit, you start to throttle down. However, until you've reach a certain speed you can still lose the interdiction. In this case that happened, you submitted but you were defeated before you finished the submission. It results in a rough dropout, damage and the extended FSD timer. For this reason, keep playing the game until submission is over.

I never gave up and I took my lumps but now I beat Interdiction 80 or 90 percent of the time. The times that I lose make me angry because they waste my time but I just turn around and start blasting away because there isn't anything in the sky I cant take if I want to. Many times the Interdictator gets dictated and runs like a yellow bellied, lily livered, greasy poll cat.

No - that is not correct. I always submit ('cos them I'm ready to fight or flight quickly) and never take any damage. (In fact if I get trash-talked I will throttle back and drop out of supercruise first because then I am sitting with my ports open ready to KWS and take-on the pirate as it drops into the instance in front of me a few seconds after I do.)

I have just once taken a interdiction damage hit and I figured that maybe I was a bit slow to throttle back but it so annoyed me that I just blasted the heck out of the naughty pirate without even bothering to scan or anything - luckily it turned out to be an anarchy system so I didn't get a murder bounty but I should have KWS'ed the npc twerp cos that would have paid for my repairs.

I'm finding , that even when submitting to interdiction quickly, still I getting a lot of interdiction FSD failures, seems very random, but I will keep an eye on velocity, see if the above comments hold true

Wow. Nice necro! ;)

When you throttle down, it takes several seconds before you drop. If in that time your opponent fills their red bar, it counts as lost interdiction.
You can avoid it if you still follow the escape vector. You won't fill your bar with throttle to 0, but at least you prevent the attacker to fill theirs.

If you throttle down no damage should happen, although due to very buggy NPC behaviour and even more iffy network code you can still get the interdict fail despite immediately reducing throttle.

I would bug report it.

As a corollary to that, I have several times on throttling back and submitting had the message "interdiction avoided" - weird but then again all NPC interdiction nonsense is weird.

( P.S. - Yes nice necro. )
