General / Off-Topic Interesting BBC News thread on SimCity Online Game

At least E: D will have offline mode :). I hope that we'll be able to at least register our games, even if we can't play online.

EA only listens to sales figures. Every person who gave EA money for this is basically saying:

  • I approve of invasive DRM.
  • I approve of always online connection requirements, even to play single-player.
  • I approve of not having access to the game I paid for after release.
  • I approve of how EA treats its customers.
  • Here's my money, please continue to do ALL OF THIS.

Harsh. But probably, completely fair! :)

Thought this had relevence here - wonder if ED could have a similiar issue when no-one wants to leave?!

Thoughts?

I want to point out that any program can not run without errors.
All programmers need time to test the program. Alpha and Beta testing can detect a lot of errors. But the real burden on servers they do not check. Due to the fact that this is a huge project will be the first Frontier, when you start the project in any case be small or big trouble.
I hope the players can accept them with indulgence, and give developers as much information to help solve these problems, not blame developers without constructive proposals.

And remember - do not mistake the one who does not do anything ;)

Oh well as soon as I heard what EA were planning I decided not to bother.

They are trying to copy Steam but failing miserably.

We should have a pool to see when then servers go down.

I reckon 18 months.

So glad that I didn't throw my money off at Simcity 2013. With all of these issues I've read during these past few days, SimCity series just feels tarnished.:(

I would love to play Simcity, but I have boycoted all of EA games from my PC since the launch of Origin.

This isn't about how games will always have bugs and how it's impossible for developers to test everything before release though - it's about forcing stuff onto games which they do not need and which, in cases like these, make them unplayable (usually because of (failed) drm-attempts).

There is no reason why a game like Sim City should have to be connected to the Internet all the time when you play if you just want to play it as single player.

When the developers/publishers insist on implementing functionality that no (or at least very few) gamers want anyway, they are not going to get much sympathy for how difficult it is to test/make that stuff work.

...

Sorry, my English is still bad.
Of course, the functions of DRM too loaded servers, but have not yet devised effective ways to protect the rights of developers.
More and more companies come to this method of protecting their products, and I do not see anything wrong with that.
Of course, a permanent connection to the Internet have to be stated in the minimum system requirements for the purchase of the product, and the buyer should know what he pays the money.
ED pointed out that a single game can be run without an internet connection (if I am not mistaken, this information was announced at the Kickstarter), but at the moment there is no information about the minimum system settings for the game.

Allow me to apologize for that misconstrued your question.

I'm very disappointed to hear this.

I've only been peripherally aware of the new Sim City title, but it looked really good.

EA's insidious approach to their gaming titles has finally backfired on them, I find it hard to sympathise. Unfortunately it's the consumer (as usual) who gets the short shrift.

While I'm still happy to use Steam, I'm finding Origin less and less palatable.
