Interesting how the ETA timer doesn't work in supercruise

Yes I understand that it can still be utilized.

Just find it interesting how it never reads correctly in SC due to our speed never being constant.

Don't really care, but it's funny they didn't tweak the algorithm to factor accel/decel under optimum conditions atleast like they probably would if this were "irl"

They couldn't do that unless you had an 'autopilot' as there are too many variables to work on.

The current system where it tells you your ETA based on current velocity and distance is the best you will get without some form of autopilot (which tbh I think would be more prevalent irl space travel) But I don't want one of those! :D

It's probably related to the fact that it isn't an ETA timer.

Okay let's get unnecessarily technical.

The "estimated time enroute" or ETE timer. Better? ;)

There are not too many variables.

-distance
-acceleration to top speed
-distance decel would need to begin to stop on time based on ship speed.

There are already far more complicated algorithms in the game code already

Ok what about how you've set your throttle?
Effects on velocity if you travel through and gravitational areas en-route.

Or simply any change you as a pilot can/will make...

Like I said if you had an 'autopilot' then yes a route could be plotted and a true ETA could be displayed. However seeing as it isn't automated then all it can display is how long it would take you to get there using current distance/velocity.

Think of it like your range to empty display on your car. You drive nice and clean you get a nice range but if you full throttle everywhere then you get a much lower range.
If you change half way from clean driving to race driving then your range reduced in reaction to your driving style. Simples.

It works perfectly. Your speed changes constantly so the ETA changes constantly too. Watch what happens if you keep the same speed (30km/s) near something!

You have done this topic before Waagenator. That you do not like it doesn't mean it doesn't do what it was designed to do.

Repped for being 100% correct. I, for one, would rather see the ETA timer function as is described in the manual and another UI element added.

Perhaps a box similar to the planetary alignment box that changes color from red to yellow to green depending on speed and relative distance to target destination.

So people could screw with it if they went out of their way to do so. What's your point? People overwhelmingly fly the most efficient route possible ... since... you know... the endless grinding in this game?

You are completely missing the point. The indicator is working just fine for it's intended purpose. This indicates that you have some personal bugbear about it that just isn't much of an issue in general. Given that this isn't the first time you've raised the subject I'm assuming that you are just forums trolling from now on.

Those last 6 seconds seem to drag on....
