Movies. A few simple options will allow people interested in making the ability to do so. Like EVE (which for all its problems is beautiful) even now I can see the Elite Dangerous is crying out for the attention of Machinima and movie makers alike, even I have a few ideas of things I'd like to do, but restricted to first person view... it'll be almost impossible.

Once you can get out of the pilots seat there will be plenty of ways to make movies. We don't need 3rd person IMO. A probe of some kind that can record video would work for people who don't have a friend to help them or for before we can get out of the seat.

The usual argument with this is that 3rd person view often gives an unfair visual advantage over first person view.

So maybe allowing it in solo play only would allow those that like it, to use it, and those that don't like it to have no reason to complain.

THIS is pure conjecture at this point and a long long way off.

Thanks God .. FD decided to do it like we actually see in the alpha.

NO 3rd person please, i would really hate 3rd person in a game like this.

... by the way i think also you don't have to be worried about it.
When the ''walk outside your spaceship'' expansion will be available sure you will not complain about this topic anymore.

I've played Eve Online since 2007 - it's a space sim entirely seen from the 3rd person. One reason I'm really looking forward to E-D is that it's 1st person.

I think the ultimate view would be 1st person using Oculus Rift. It gives more immersion. 3rd person tends to break immersion, in my opinion.

Putting aside the debate of this topic for the moment..

It's a testament to have created such a visually stunning thing as it is (to already have awesome videos out there and people wanting to make more productions going forward), and for those who've seen the improvements (phase to phase so far) we 'ain't seen nuttin' yet!' So to speak.

Yes, lets shuffle 'Gameplay' down the list, below 'Minority group who want to make movies (which is a good source of free advertising!)'

Seriously though, I'd love to see some Elite machinima, but that should be supported through proper tools instead of people cobbling together snippets of gameplay.

I think Elite is a 1st person game, it's just a real shame that that decision to completely exclude 3rd person will make it significantly more difficult to do the game justice in fan videos. Which are free advertising.

Clear Skies springs to mind.

If there was a way of doing it so that it could never be used during normal gameplay it would be fine. But I don't see how they could do that. Without it there would always be a way where it either actually would, or be suspected of, giving some kind of edge to the player doing it. Until they could find some guaranteed way of stopping a feature like that being used to gain some kind of advantage then we shouldn't have it.

I'm a bit flummoxed as to what this advantage would be considering you'd lose access to your instrumentations which are all superior to the Mk 1 eyeball. I'd never use it in combat. I prefer my instruments and 1st person view for aiming/shooting.

+1 for including it as a solo player option at the very least. Code is there, won't affect anyone, why the heck not! :)

You might not. But others might. That's the problem. In this 3rd person view of yours, would you be able to rotate the camera around at will? If so, you can pretty much forget about it ever getting implemented. If it is fixed behind, probably not even then really.

Please not even in single player if there is another PC or NPC around as it would devalue Elite status!

:S

Arguably -

Starting with something other than a sidewinder and 100cr devalues Elite status. Switching between solo, private group and all group devalues Elite status. Playing with fancy hardware devalues Elite status. Playing with voice command devalues Elite status.

I really don't get this 'purist' thing going on here...

But this argument is arguably valid:

But hypotheticals don't convince me there's a real advantage going on here, especially if zoom is limited to a reasonable degree. In EVE there is an advantage to zooming out because ship flight is automated and you just point and click and shoot. ED flight is NOT automated and being able to fly around and aim and shoot outside of the 1st person view would be harder. IF someone can convince me HOW this could be used to tactical advantage I'd see an argument here.

Edit: I actually thought of one, someone flying behind you stealthed WOULD be seen on 3rd person view.

I don't think it's a 'purist' thing, unless I have missed something. I interpreted it more as a differing opinion kind of thing. You want it, "most" of the people who have posted don't.

As a player choice, it might be risky. I can see some people loving to "grief" those guys, knowing they can't fight back. If I've thought it, others will have too! :p
