Would people say they are worth it for a die-hard headset user like myself?

Try it and see.

Sounds is very much a matter of taste. Background sounds will generally be half heard.

More for atmosphere than anything else.

I might just do that. I am quite sensitive to sounds so I think I will notice a difference. Planning on getting a new headset too, as I think the speakers on my current model are starting to go off-tune. Old model.

To be honest, coming froma pro audio background, anything half decent with good DAC sets in it (digital to analogue conversion) and a very good set of headphone drivers would be noticeable, but it sort of is subjective - gaming headsets aren't really studio monitoring quality and that is where you'll get the best benefit.
Spend the cash on good headsets first.

Definitely. I splashed out on a pair of AKG K702s, and now even onboard sound is stunning compared to my previous headphones, I also picked up a cheapish external DAC/headphone amp and while it's definitely better it's not massively better. All that said, I have pretty messed up hearing.

I currently have a separate Creative Sound Blaster Z card on my rig and have a set of HyperX Cloud II headphones with 7.1 virtual surround - sounds are fantastic. Games that rely on directional cues such as first person shooters like COD have exceptional sound quality and spatial awareness especially when using options like 'Scout Mode' in the Sound Blaster software to augment the directional cues.

It all depends on the motherboard really. I recently built my brother a new gaming rig using the Gigabyte Z170X gaming 7 mobo - the built-in audio is a better version of my indie card - Creative SoundCore 3D Gaming Audio - and comes with all the bells and whistles mine has plus more.
