Newcomer / Intro Intro and question - Elite (1980)

Hey errbody!
Just wanted to say hi and love the game. And I wanted to ask, how come I have never heard of Elite (1984) or Elite: Frontiers until this year? Is it because I'm a dirty, silly Yank who lives in the Colonies?

'Tis entirely possible: Elite 84 was a huge hit in the UK on the Sinclair Spectrum [called the Timex Sinclair 2068 in the States] and on the Acorn BBC computer (where it first appeared). Before all this Internet-malarkey I guess not everyone got to hear about games as easily.

Elite was also big on the Commodore 64 and others; Frontier on Amiga etc.

So maybe you have led a sheltered life? ;)

The earlier games were also well known in Commonwealth countries (Australia and New Zealand, at least), possibly due to trade agreements or licensing at the time. I'm not sure if they were ever big in Canada, however.

We never saw much of the original BBC Micro, but Commodore, Acorn, Sinclair & Amiga were huge here and there were versions of Elite for all those platforms, and later for the IBM PC.

I live in the US and played the original Elite a bunch but got it from a friend. I also played Oolite (the open source clone).

Here in germany a lot of people played it. But i agree, before the internet it was easy to miss such things.

Excellent find on the video, those were the days! These guys were geniuses: doing so much with so little power and memory.

I always get a kick knowing I was living close to Cambridge at this time. Sinclair, Acorn - it all started there.
