Introduction, and question about freeing slaves

Hello, I've just joined up here, look forward to chatting to you all. I actually have a question/suggestion about Elite : Dangerous. I did do a search but I couldn't find a similar thread. Basically I'm just wondering if there's any way to legally transport/free slaves?

For example, whilst hunting Wanted pilots for bounties one of my targets dumped his cargo, about 7 units of Slaves, into deep space before he was destroyed. I cannot pick those slaves up and deliver them to freedom as far as I am aware, if I pick them up I run the risk of being labelled a criminal. My only option is to leave them to die in the cold, uncaring depths of space (dramatic, I know). Harsh.

Is there more to the process that I'm not seeing, or is transporting slaves just always illegal under all circumstances?

I think the Federation even shoot slave cargo out of space.. 1t per container, that's about 15 people killed. Talking about "freeing" slaves...

I'd love to get in on the fed vs empire slave story but I don't think there's any way to enjoy it the way I would want to, which is like you, just saving as many slave as I can just for the moral of it. So I just ignore and pass on all that fuzz with a bit more frustration every time I see a new Galactic news feed.

I could be wrong though as ED's devs seems to try very hard to make the game mechanics, stats and attributes a matter of combined trial & error and guess work.

I did my first "fetch this" slave run, so headed off, bought two tons (thus legal), but the station I took them back to treats slaves as illegal goods, despite the ruling faction of that station having asked me to go and bring them back. I snuck into the station without being scanned (I have Allied status, which sometimes helps). However it struck me as odd that I'd be fined (or killed?) for bringing back something that station/faction asked me to bring to them. The faction mission was ultimately to free the slaves I'd bought, so I lost money (about 20k) but earned some influence and reputation. Thoughts welcome.
