Newcomer / Intro Introduction: or (god I really hate doing these)

Hey all,

Intrepid space commander embarking on long journey seeking: Wash, Zoe, Kaylee, Jayne, Inara, River, Shepherd Book, River.... and I guess I'd bring Simon(the tool)... for exciting heroics and general badassitude...

and yes.... before anyone says anything... I know I said River Twice... What Can I say? I like the Crazy ones.

do your self a favour, learn to fly like a leaf on the wind, your skills will get tested :)

(to be fair, most of the time they will be tested when docking, but it's still good!)

I find that exiting is far worse than entering, but that's because my throttle-settings seems to have only one mode: Full power :D

And Welcome, Wepwaet! Leave your sanity by the door, as it's frowned upon here :p

i find the fog in the airlock makes it harder to see incoming ships when you exit, so i'll second that. as for your throttle, assuming you're talking literally then you probably have your throttle setup incorrectly. if it's an analogue throttle then do not use the forward and reverse options, those will turn your throttle into buttons. instead use the axis mapping option. for combat you need to be able to hit 50% throttle or your ship will turn like a bus. that said sometimes i struggle not to boost at the last moment, and to keep my throttle in a sensible spot when docking, but that's more a fault between the chair and joystick than a fault with my rig or the game ;)

The throttle-thing happens because I'm impatient, and forget that the Viper I pilot these days is a rather fast ship when all four pips are in ENG, and that there's a certain bit of inertial drift when you're correcting your course. Net result: The letterbox is VERY tiny when you're hurtling at it at around 300. Not to mention that it's damn hard to spot the Sidewinder just outside the fog!

Currently playing with Keyboard/Mouse only, since my Logitech G940 is currently loaned to a friend. Not that I think it'll be any easier to leave a station with full HOTAS-setup and rudderpedals, mind you...

I'm a complete newb to pc gaming, one of the things that's always put me off is the controls for pc. When I got this game I picked up a black widow HOTAS. Cheap as chips and I will upgrade at some point but the throttles are very smooth and make docking a pleasure.

ahh yes, then you suffer from the same problem between the chair and controls that i do. i find my type 6 is less prone to that issue than my viper is. my asp is somewhere in between the two.

that said i have had fun trying to fit my type 6 through the letter box when a type 9 is already filling it. did you know there is just enough room either side of a type9 for a type 6 to fit if it's on its side? the asp can do that too, though i advise power to shields as i've not got my asp through sideways yet without scraping the wing tips.

i can confirm that a HOTAS setup does nothing to alleviate this problem, indeed i suspect it may make matters worse.

Welcome! Perhaps I should do this introduction as well since I did not do it yet ;)

River is one heck of a hot spaceheroine, so just mention her as much as you like ^^

I just wonder why you didn't mention their captain :p

I'm a complete newb to pc gaming, one of the things that's always put me off is the controls for pc. When I got this game I picked up a black widow HOTAS. Cheap as chips and I will upgrade at some point but the throttles are very smooth and make docking a pleasure.
there are a lot of players that prefer a gamepad over a joystick, so if you feel more affinity towards that then give something like an xbox controller a go. you will probably spend a lot of time on the keyboard with the black widow, great price for testing the water but very few buttons, and many of them need you to let go of the throttle anyway. if you have a gamepad you can plug into the PC then you can get a nice boost in the amount of time you have fingers on flight controls. something like a thrustmaster t-flight HOTAS is probably the entry level HOTAS that will have enough buttons to keep your hands on the controls as the HOTAS acronym suggests.

really though the only important thing is that what ever control you have, you enjoy playing with it.

I use a controler for mincraft but wanted to go flight stick for this game. Agreed the black widow has hardly any buttons but I downloaded voice attack last night and that pretty much freed up my stick.
Still not 100% happy with my bindings but I'm getting there slowly.

Uhmm.. I have to say I'm not sure I agree with that last statement as tbh I can't think of a more accurate and easy to use setup than a good HOTAS.

Moot point about pedals over twist for sure.

My HOTAS has no twist and getting used to the pedals took a while but hey the name of the game is enjoyment and no doubt somebody good with a keyboard and a mouse could probably give me a good wippin in a fight :)

hehe, you missed the point of that last statement. we're talking about flying dangerously fast while docking/undocking, and a control setup you feel confident with only makes that problem worse!

Ahh, yes indeed I get it now,, and I must agree,,

Not that I've ever done it ofc

Even worse when it's a type 9 and takes up the whole width of the letterbox coming in as you're going out, that's how I got bounced back into the station and blown up by station defence before I could even re-orient to get out.

Viper - Small, light and fast.
Type 9 - Big, cumbersome and slow, but surprisingly, they are like running into a bouncy castle.

Since I'm mostly n00bing about in the n00bier sections of the universe I haven't had this happen yet, but I have been so close enough to other ships that I could tell what the pilots eyecolour was a few times. Makes for an interesting launch, to put it mildly. :D

Make sure you stop at Jayne's town.
Oh and don't soar like a leave on the wind, blast through it like a harpoon....

I didn't mention Mal, cause I get to be the Capt. XD
