Investing in ???

Are there plans to include investing in things such as stocks or new planet upstarts or whatever? If so, how fleshed out will it be? Short/long positions? News effects?

With this in play, a person wouldn't have to always either be a hauler/pirate/bounty to make/lose money.

Just curious as to your reactions to this idea. Forgive me if it has already been discussed, I didn't get any search results.

it has been discussed before, the thread title had something to do with derivatives if you want to look it up. the idea went down in flames as the whole idea behind the game is to be in a ship hauling cargo, bounty hunting, pirating or exploring your way across the galaxy, not be sat in an office somewhere raking it in while your computer is turned off because of market fluctuations.

With respect to that thread, I think they took it too far. I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with having a rudimentary stock market on which you can invest, but the idea of having futures, options etc. is just silly.

shares equal ownership and the franchise has never been about owning anything apart from your ship.

So what will planetary landings achieve when released?

being able to walk on planets, drive vehicles, land at space ports both above ground and maybe even under water, go to the zoo, go on safari, take a bus, meet a secret agent to deliver a package, fly a plane, sail a boat, drive a speedboat, jump a wall, climb a tree, go hunting, go fishing, stay in a hotel.

all those things and more, maybe even buy a house but we wont be buying companies, we wont be making money when we are not logged in and we wont be owning fleets of ships piloted by NPC's

But you can also lose money on stock markets; it's not a get rich quick scheme, just a potential option within the game, like all the others you mention.

Immersion's the name of the game!

while true the main point is that with a dynamic stock market system it would be possible to do both while not logged in to the game. its that fact more than anything that runs counter to the core game mechanics.

just imagine coming back after 2 weeks away and finding you've been totally wiped out by a stock market crash, or it could go the other way and you could hit the big time with a massive payout. not much incentive to fly if you've lost everything and no incentive to try if you can make easy money on the stock markets.

can you imagine a game based around space ships where few people fly them as too many are playing the markets for that one big score? it would make an empty universe.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find that thread. I agree, it seems a bit out of line with the game. I'm unfamiliar with previous renditions. Just thought with a commodities market, there would possibly be another side of it that moves along with the supply and demand.

GTA V attempted a stock market but failed miserably. My actual portfolio I buy/sell stocks speaks for itself..."don't quit your day job!".

you never know, in years to come FDev may decide to make use of the market data and release a DLC for it, or even sell it as a standalone game.

nothing can really ever be totally ruled out until the man himself, DB(OBE) says 'no we will never do that' - but i dont see it making up part of the core gameplay, an add-on maybe but not the core.
