IronMan mode group. Anybody interested?

Hi Everyone,

I am thinking about creating a group for those who wish to play "IronMan" mode. Before I do I wanted to see if there was any interest in this from others.

I play a self imposed Ironman mode. In case you don't know what Ironman mode is, here is how I play:

What is IronMan mode (or at least this is how I play it):
Dead is dead (or at least could be!). If my ship gets destroyed for any reason then I have to effectively "roll a dice" to determine if I survived. The probability of survival is affected by various things. For example if I crash and explode docking then my survival chance is high compared to if I crash into a star whilst fuel scooping 100 ly from a populated system.

The "dice roll" is handily calculated by using a very helpful utility by KellyR.

I currently play in OpenPlay and last night I decided to have a fight with another player from an opposed power trying to expand into a system we are also trying to expand into. It was a tough decision and I followed the player for quite a while and tried get a comms chat going before making my decision to attack. It certainly was the most exciting 10 mins I had in game. My cobra was down to 13% hull before I managed to escape after we collided with each other (completely by accident) which damaged both our ships significantly. It definitely shows how careful you have to be in space (when playing IronMan mode!).

Frontier do intend (according to my forum reading) to add an IronMan mode in at some point. This will mean those who choose IronMan mode will only see others playing IronMan mode.

Until that option is available an IronMan mode group is the next best thing for those who want a little risk in their game. I had a quick search and have not found such a group. It would allow those who wish to to play IronMan to do so in a private group if they wish. I think I will continue to play in OpenPlay (as I want the risk and challenge) but I would like to build up a "friend" list of players who also use IronMan mode. Members of the group would be free to attack each other (and anyone else etc), the group is just a place to meet more than anything else. However it would be nice to wing up with fellow players using IronMan mode as well. The idea is to treat the IronMan mode group in the same way as if Frontier had added an "IronMan" mode option when starting a new commander.

I play that way, player combat encounters can get a little 'tense'. 20 sec air and 12% hull was the closest before my recent death and reset when several of SJ's upgraded minions gave me a kicking, oops

I've seen a few other posters talking about ironman, might be worth searching the forums.

However:

Whilst it might be on a 'nice to do' list I wouldn't count this as definitely coming. A private group will already allow what you've described, and the cost of developing a proper escape pod mechanic (or equivalent) might not add enough substence to make it worthwhile.
Besides, playing in open with other players who don't value their ship as much just adds to it.

Sounds like a great idea, but without players having to abide by the rules it seems a little vulnerable to trouble makers.

Trouble makers. I see your point but I already play in Open so I have not really lost anything.

If anyone wants to add me my game name is Nobkins. The forum would not allow that as it thought it was a little rude I guess (it is not intended to be and is the same commander name I used playing the original elite when I was a little lad .

It is a great idea and would be privy to spending a some time in this group but the biggest problem you will have is that it will be honor based. If a player blows up his ship while docking it would be his honor that would determine if he reported it. Really the only way to be 100% is that if you died in PvP battle then you died. Period. because you would have another CMDR that could report he killed you. Other than that it is open to people just simply not reporting they died.

pretty much this....as much as I love the idea and hope for a real Ironman mode at some point I have reservations about an honor based one

See the above quote from my original post. The group is NOT just about playing in a Private Group. Those who choose to play like this are welcome and if there are members not playing fair then they havn't not lost anything over playing in OpenPlay where I am yet to meet a player who self imposes IronMan mode.

For me I wish to have a group which allows me to contact other like minded players for adventures and excitement. A gathering place not just a place to limit who I play with / against.

Hope that makes sense. For those who want to use the group to limit players to those using IronMan mode then your criticism is valid. Then again compared to Open play you have lost nothing and hopefully gained a majority of players who do play fair.
