Is 3P mining dead?

After nearly losing my mining Anaconda right after the upgrade, I decided to move back to a clipper. The Annie just couldn't turn fast enough to keep the smaller fighters off, fair enough. I take the new clipper back to the rings and, as expected, get immediately jumped by 4 pirates. I just boost boost away until they drop off the radar and go about carving up rocks. I'm just on my third session in this ring (and pirates spawn every single time I start), and the 3p pickings are really slim. Lots of the new stuff, carbon, nickel, etc etc, but my 3P collection rate is maybe 1/3 to 1/4 of what it was. In my experience mining wasn't so lucrative that it needed to be nerfed, but this takes mining speeds back to the manual collection days......[blah]
Anybody experiencing the same thing, or is my RNG luck just really really bad over the last few days?

Cheers all!:)

Is your ring system still Pristine ? My favourite mining spot has been nerfed, and is no longer pristine. Given that it was never on any of the published lists, and is only a stones throw from 20 Ophiuchi which is on everyones hit parade, and gets heaps more traffic, I'm just a little miffed.
Coupled with the total lack of mining missions for the 3P's, it's fairly obvious the devs want all us miners to embrace the new paradigm, and go ice mining for unobtainium low something or other diamonds.

You know I didn't think of that, but I've just checked (I'm in it now) and it's still listed as pristine. I've always thought of mining as a nice change of pace from CG's or rank grind or whatever, but the return on time is so low it doesn't seem to be a viable option any more. I haven't tried ice mining, I read an earlier post somewhere that said the return was quite poor (think low rocky reserves). This engineers update seems to suck all around......

If you are not pew pewing, you're not playing.

Hehe, once I get done on this mining trip I'll probably go do a few missions, maybe a CG, maybe hit up a res for some pew pew. I hear though it's gotten a lot tougher (I normally run a Python), my 'conda got spanked on my last mining run, maybe I should try out a vulture or FDL ....

I found all the Low Temp Diamonds!

You are using prospectors, right?

I've been running the CG and after only targeting 'roids with gold, I am still coming back with decent profits--majority gold, 1/4 Painite.

Yep, I'm at LFT65, pristine metallic around the fourth planet. Mining here was pretty reasonable pre engineers, maybe ~$1.5M/hour. A nice change of pace with a reasonable return.
I do have the upside of collecting materials for synthesis (110 of 600 so far), but that's kind of a side note. Since the update though, things seem pretty diluted ... I've been mining for about
2 hours and have maybe $1M. I might be better off doing missions, but I've read on the forums here that it's constant interdiction. Meh.

Sign up for the community goal at Naunin. The station is paying inflated prices for all mined materials (Painite is 65k/ton). Head to Delkar for pristine metallic rings.

I share your experience... I could go through 50 prospector limpets and find at best 2 asteroids with +-10% painite.

I think it's quite lacking a measure of skill. There's no visual queues it's all 100% RNG. Severely missing a filter option on my refinery as to automatically vent ores that I'm not interested in. ( Figured making a UI for the refinery is much less cumbersome than doing so with collector limptes due to the significant amount of mats/commodities).
Limptes are slower ( probably related to their previous behavior of blowing themselves up too often ) but nonetheless, it slows the progress down.
I have yet to find any "High" content asteroid.
No more missions at all for the 3 P's.
My ring's 100LY from the highest selling point in the galaxy for painite, yet I just can't fill my hold enough to justify making the trip. At all. I'll have about 10 to 15 tons of Painite, after increasing my usual limpet stock out on trips ( to be pickier ), in a 200 slot cargo bay.

The new Ice mining thing is fine, it's all pretty and what not but I can't agree with the decision to replace every mission on the board to be in that regard. It should've been an addition, not replacing older missions.
Bulletin boards don't spawn enough missions anyway. People still resort to mode-switching simply because there is no reason not to..

Sad to hear all these reports, mining had brought me back to the game in October 2015 but it seems in won't be able to do so this time around. I remember being able to find at least 2 or 3 asteroids with 40%+ Painite yield during one mining run (filling up a Type 9) but if that's not the case anymore, I don't see the point.

Oh, and there's a lot of pew-pewing going on during mining too, if you try mining in a RES the pew-pew is guaranteed.

There are systems that buy painite for 74k or more so even if you find less than pre 2.1 you still make the same credits. I usually find one 40%+ painite asteroid during one session and tons of palladium and platinum much more than osmium that I need for missions

You still find some. Going through 50 limpets was probably my bad luck RNG draw. It remains true though over-all Painite takes a much smaller proportion in my cargo hold on every return than it did before. I now even have to just trim off asteroids to fill my hold with whatever when I run out of limpets.. And I usually take quite the lot of them.

How did you do the math for that? I find I make a LOT less. Especially without the 3 P's missions.

I've been mining for the last 2 days, so my observations are below:

Triple P is still very viable - I mined around 2-2.5 million each day
I always drop into a random spot in the ring. Usually a NPC or two follows me in. In which case I will either kill then. Or simply leave and reenter the ring to get rid of them
Take a huge and a few medium multicannons as these make short work of most ships
Take a shield and stack scboosters
Missions for metals etc is not as good as before as ice ring stuff seems to be more important

I've been flying a Conda btw.

What kind of time-frame are we looking at? That said, it places it just above piracy and exploration. Both which yet have to have a serious undertaking.

7-12Mil/hour is the very least I'd expect from a top tier ship... It's an investment after-all.
