Is a Stargate a request too far?

Yup... a Stargate. Only accessible by the smaller ships ( or even only the sidewinder or eagle/adder) transporting you wherever at no fuel cost.
Due to the possibility of licensing issues, maybe a paid for add on (I would certainly buy it)

How would your ship navigate it?
Going through the first Gate that you discover, and once you reach the other side/location, puts a number of coloured locations in your nav computer which if you select one of them you get to jump to that location at no fuel cost - exiting out of the Gate at the other side. (makes transporting only 4/8 tons of rares worth it maybe due to the vast distances involved)

Just a thought for the future.

Star gates, warp gates, jump gates and many other gates; to make it easier to cross vast spaces in seconds. I think the last 'request' was for one between the Bubble and the new little bubble.

The answer is always the same. Nope, this is not Elite and never should be.

ever read the Algebrist by Ian M Banks? in this story humans find that an alien race has built a network of gateways in the center of gas giants all across the cosmos.

it's an old scifi idea but a very popular one, and it does a good job of explaining away the fermi paradox too.

I would probably have to go and change my pants if I found out ED had done something to this effect.

if you haven't read the Algebrist, then i seriously suggest you do... plus the other Ian M Banks books too, and while your at it, check out Alastair Reynolds too.
happy reading commanders.

Except that, by published lore found in official Elite novels, prior to FSD, interstellar travel was done by station generated gating...

The real "answer" is that time gates are some people's idea of enforcing the idea of "how huge" the galaxy is.

Why people are so sure that a Zen meditation app is what Elite is and what everyone wants of it???
Elite had time dilation in it. Multiplayer game cannot have that. But it have to have something instead of it.

How about a freighter service with a multiple lines. Which take in your ship and yourself. Going out like each 20-60 minutes to multiple destinations inside and ouside bubble.
What is the jump range of Jaques station? Well it can be highly modded, but 40-60 mins to Colonia is quite valid for any other, in my opinion.

If Earth time is the standard time, then the further you jump, your ship time would increment to match Earth Time when you come out of Witch Space. Might mean two time zones: Earth Time and Local Time

Elite didn't have time dilation, no. The sequels that had the somewhat contentious flight model *required* time dilation to make the game playable in a reasonable timeframe.

Honestly I'd love to see micro jump gates or something of the like in order to deal with getting from star A to star B in a system rather than stoping playing Elite for 10, 15 minutes while the game waits on itself to get somewhere else. Anything to make those interstellar frameshift drive journeys a little less painful. Playing a game shouldn't be painful.

I LOVE Stargate. Absolutely watched all the movies plus SG1 plus Atlantis.

That being said, it wouldn't make a good addition to the game. Elite is more of a futuristic "space sim." Traveling through wormholes put there by aliens is more sci-fi. It doesn't fit very well into the Elite universe.

Now I'm really not up to date on all the Elite lore, but doesn't hyperspace work by directing you to the nearest star? And a star is made up by a lot of mass. That's why you always end up by a star whenever you come out of hyperspace and not a planet. Maybe "short cuts" all throughout the galaxy would work like jumping towards a black hole or Sag A but that really doesn't feel like it belongs in a game like Elite.

How about stable wormholes (a concept freely available without copyright issues) Dot around stable wormholes, some one way, some bi-directional. Discovered via scanning for anomalies (upgraded scanner costing millions perhaps) You'll always get where you're going with it, you just might not be able to get back the short way. Great way to escape Thargoids and Bad Guys....... where'd he go?
