Newcomer / Intro Is a stored ship stuck in a base?

I bought myself a Cobra Mk3 on the advice from the thread I made a week or so ago. I couldn't wait, even though it was silly to do so without extra funds to kit it out. I decided to store it while I get some more cash.

On the Galaxy map there's an icon above the system where I stored it. Does that mean if I want to use it I have to go back to that system and swap it out? I suppose expecting Saints Row style vehicle teleportation to wherever my safe house is was a bit much, but I suppose I didn't expect this aspect of realism to creep in. Kinda defeats the point of vehicle storage if you can't have it shipped (hurr) to where you are. If I had an explorer and went thousands of light years away and decided to do some combat, flying back would be a pain.

Or am I missing something?

Long answer: yes, but there will be a way to have ships transported to your location in future. No one's sure if that means the ship will actually fly to your location(which would mean you'll have to wait for it and risk it being destroyed in transit) or if it will just teleport in instantly.

Until then the best way to get all your ships in one location is to buy them all from one station or use sidewinders as "taxis" exchanging them for the ship you want to take. Just strip out the shields, cargo and weapons on the sidey, give it an A grade FSD, take it to the station with the ship you want, store the sidey and sell it. Problem solved.

I've also heard of people using sideys as marker beacons. They just leave one stored in a system they want to find again and it shows up on the galaxy map. Useful things!

Hmm, silly me being over jealous with my cash. Kinda tied to this system now when I wanted to splore.

Welp, lesson learned!
Now off to grab some more cash to outfit it better. Hopefully.

I hope they wont make instant teleportation cause that would seriously break the sense of realism.
I mean if they can teleport a whole ship then whats the point of traders doing all the trips moving cargo. they might as well just teleport the cargo. :D

So I seriously absolutely hope there's no instant teleportation in the game. Saints row is known for it's unrealistic gameplay, we dont need that in Elite Dangerous lol

Going by past experience any transport of ships feature will be low priority .... look how long any changes to mining have taken?

My bets are....

a) it will cost credits .... depending on ship size and distance

b) a time delay will be involved to allow for ship delivery over distance

Agreed, a big no to teleportation, and I'm sure that will never happen - it goes against FD's lore for the game at the most basic level.

However, paid transportation of ships to your current location, with a suitable time-delay and without any cargo included, would be a great idea. A fee based on distance plus a small percentage extra to cover insurance would do it. If the ship is destroyed in transit, the shipping company pays the insurance for a new ship. Easy.

NOTE: Originally the game mechanics were proposed quite differently. You could only store a ship if you purchased or rented hangar space at a designated station. You could have any number of owned or rented hangars, and you could arrange for ships to be transported between them.

This whole system was dropped in favour of the simple one we have now where ship storage is automatic. I don't imagine they will change this, unless when the first person game upgrade happens they revise the whole thing to give us personal hangars (similar to how Star Citizen is doing it).

I think I remember them saying it would take just as long as if you would do it yourself.

That would be a cool space job. Just taxi someones super expensive and badass ride across the galaxy.

I actually use sidewinders as planet markers....makes it easier to find my favorite trade hubs and such..have a dozen or so of the little darlings out there..lol

I have been pondering the issue of getting my two ships back at the same base, i think the solution is simple - leave the first ship at my home base, buy a sidewinder to travel to the second ship and bring it back to the home base leaving the sidewinder where the second ship was? Does that make sense or am i missing something crucial here? :)

Yeah, you missed the part about selling the sidewinder when you pick up your second ship. You're not going to need that any more.

And no OP, your ship isn't 'stuck' in a base. The ship is docked at the base where you docked it. I don't see why anyone would think that ships automatically transport themselves wherever they are in the galaxy. That doesn't make any sense.

Kudos to FD for keeping it like this and fingers crossed they never change it.

This could be a cool MP feature, where we could for example, make a remote bulletin post going.

"Hey noob!,
Want to make some quick cash?
I kinda stuck my head down a barrel of beer last night, and long story short and three tattoos later. I lost my viper in a poker game with a couple of local fed navy brass, and the Major now kinda owns my ride and has me locked up in the booze tank until someone hands him the keys, since I came in a hauler that leaves me in a bit of pickle...

The keys should still be in my blue pants, inside my locker (pay no mind to the thongs, that's a story for another time, but man what a story though)
I'l give you five k, to haul it 30ly to me, and be quick that bear of a Sergeant is looking at me funny.
