Is a Type 6 a viable miner vessel?

Hi all, someone with experience in mining needed here! ;)

Short of credits at the moment and my friendly Engineer is asking for materials that can only be got through mining, I can really only afford a Type 6 and fully kit it out, has anybody used one can is it any good?

Thanks in advance!

Not tried a T6 but I first tested mining in a Cobra so yes you can go mining in it, it has enough slots. Depends what you mean by viable though. Larger the ship the better mining gets but a T6 certainly has more than the minimum internals required.

Umm, okay thanks for the answers, I should have put a bit for information in my post. By viable I was wondering if I could also make it pay for mining as well. Guess I'm just being greedy!

I've also heard that mining is difficult since the last couple of updates as the AI really harass you.

(Kitting out a Cutter for combat costs a damn fortune!)

To make good money you need lots of cargo space and internals to spare. If you have a Cutter, just use that. I mined in a Cutter, just to see what it was like. You can stick multiple refineries, prospector and collecting drones on it. I usually have a minimum of four collectors working, sometimes six; you only need one prospector at a time though. My favourite mining ship is the Clipper, so much fun, but it's not as lucrative as an Anaconda or Cutter. If you can't swap out one or two of your medium hardpoints for mining lasers due to modded weaponry, then I feel your pain! Hope this helps.

BTW, pristine rings is what you want.

AI is no problem if you know what you are doing with mining, I.e. you avoid RES sites and don't take missions before setting off (I.e. mine stuff then look for missions rather than take missions then try to mine the material). In fact outside of RES sites you are lucky to see an NPC at all after the initial jump in.
.
I'd suggest you search for some mining tips and do a bit of research. It is certainly not what I'd call hard, in fact almost the polar opposite.

Of course! It was my first dedicated mining vessel and probably the cheapest.

For just under 3 mil cr I had one that did the job.

Core internals:
3A PP
4B Thrusters
4D FSD
2D LS
3D PD
2D Sensors

Optional Internals:
5E Cargo Rack
5E Cargo Rack
5E Cargo Rack
4d Shield Gen (or another 5E Cargo Rack if you are brave.)
3d Collector controller
2B refinery (giving 5 bins)
1D Prospector controller

Hardpoints:
1D Mining laser
1D Mining laser

Utility:
3x 0C Shield Boosters.

3A PP is sufficient if you set FSD to power priority 2 so it turns off while you are mining.
If you choose to go without shields then swap the Shield boosters for a chaff and point defence maybe.

I used this for a while until I could afford a Python that basically did a much better job but is very expensive when compared.

I suggest mining anywhere along a pristine ring but NOT at the resource extraction site. Thats where the pirates be...

Dropping anywhere along a ring can spawn a pirate when you first enter, just fly away as fast as you can until they drop off your sensors and then get to the mining. You will be left in peace from then on until you leave and go back to super cruise.

If it's your first time mining then I suggest watching a quick youtube vid to find out the best method.

Fantastic, thanks!
Not my first time mining but the first time in an age and times have changed! ;)
Originally wanted to use a T9 but frankly I can't (don't want too) drop the needed credits to set it up right!

Again thanks to all - that's the help I was after! [up]

I did some mining in T6 and it was a good experience, especially if you can get some nice thrusters and make it faster and more nimble.

The T6 makes a fine miner - much better then equal priced competition. Mined in one plenty...until I could afford a Asp Explorer mining rig which, of course, is better. Still love the "6" though.
