Newcomer / Intro Is a UDP port still needed?

I found some information (https://store.elitedangerous.com/support/game/#q10) that says I need to have a UDP port forwarded from my router to my PC's IP. (I'm not using upnp.)

But I never did that. I have set up no such forward. I'm still able to play open mode, and I see other players around me.

Is this still needed, or did they change that and now it works just like in any other server-based online game where you don't need incoming UDP connectivity?

I believe you only need port forwarding if your router's internal firewall is really paranoid about what is let through.
