Is allied enough?

Heyho together,

iam still on my way to the highest fed rank. It is so hard to get these rank up missions appear :-(

Currently iam asking myself what is better. Doing missions to get mutiple sub fed factions like me (allied) or doing missions for factions iam already allied?

Additionally iam already allied with a few stations, what sense does it make to continue missions for factions where i have the highest rep?

1. Allied with the whole Federation/Empire = cool.
2. To get navy rank up missions I understand you have to get allied with a few systems...3 or more I think.
3. Rinse repeat until successful

I did most of my empire rank in one system, the Liaedin enclave. So one system should be enough.
(Earl btw)

Underhook, I would with the Pilot's Federation at least. I have found I can sit in the station and they will put up missions on the Bulletin Board for items I can buy on the Commodities list in the station! I have on occasion made a couple of hundred thousand credits just by buying stuff in it's own station...
Most of those missions weren't available when I wasn't allied.

Is there any point getting allied with independents?

You can reach allied status with independent stations much faster than you can with stations affiliated with one of the major factions, at least in my experience. Early on, if you want to look for lucrative contracts, getting friendly with a big independent station with high influence and lots of missions on the bulletin board might be worth it - you can get to the good ones faster.

From what I experienced and others have discussed, reputation doesn't appear to be the main driver of rank missions (people have reported gaining ranks reliably even to a faction they are hostile towards). In my experience, I capped reputation long, long, long before I got to Earl, and certain things that give reputation boosts (bounty hunting, etc.) don't spawn any rank missions.

My experience was that it was wholly and totally the number of normal missions I did for the major faction that caused me to get new rank missions. By the end it was about 100 missions/rank. Patch notes mentioned something called "skill" which I think is a hidden variable separate from reputation that gets built up by doing missions.

If you're gonna do a lot of missions anyway, spreading the love among minor factions helps you reputation up with the major faction, which is nice to have.

I don't think this is true. I've traded between two systems and gotten allied to both stations, many times, and there's never been a clear disparity in rep gain speed between systems linked to a major faction or a system linked to an independent system. If anything, it's the other way around because being friendly or allied to a major faction gets passed down to the affiliated faction, so you become allied much faster due to having a head start.

But rep gain is no different. It's always been based on the value of the trade - if two stations start out neutral and one trade nets 500k where the other nets 300k, you get allied first in the former.

It just takes a lot more time to build up to friendly and allied with the major factions than any local faction. But this is relatively common knowledge.

As for ranks - military ranks - it's just a matter of getting a good dice roll to find the missions. Seems pretty random to me. I don't think being allied has any effect and I'm allied to all three major factions.

I only got my last fed rank when I was finally allied with the federation in whole. In the empire I'm currently count, but not yet allied with the entire faction, so I guess it'll be a while before I finnaly get my earl mission.

So doing missions at just one system works and doing missions to get much systems allied works. This system freaks me out. Has there been any offical word how this "magical" thinks works?
