Is an alien invasion inbound?

Hello, I am aware that the following theory is far stretched and might make me seem like a lunatic or a "Conspiracy theorist", so please bear with me for a second.

What would be the point of an alien invasion, what would our stakes be if we have nothing to lose?
Why would we care if we are not involved in the Galaxy, if we have no stakes in the game, "no horse in the race" so to speak.

Creating an ever lasting Galactic conflict to, in a way motivate people to care about the state of the galaxy, to care about this or that faction, about the Federation, the Empire or the Alliance, giving people a reason to pick a side and get immersed in the world. If you look at what is currently happening in the Galaxy now, how a lot of players are busy trying to expand and how they are involved in wars and politics, trading or bounty hunting.

An invasion only means something when we are caught off guard, when we are not expecting it. When it's a "secret".

Maybe that's what Power Play is meant to be? Perhaps Power Play is meant to be a rug that will be pulled from underneath our feet once they come...

What happens then is the interesting question. Will we unite against the threat? Will some factions use this invasion as a distraction to expand even more? Will one faction rise as the spear head, or as the shield?

Just food for thought.

They are coming...

It might not kill it, but it would certainly bring a new context to Power Play and make it less monotonous.
One thing that many players seem to be missing at the moment is a clear goal, an archenemy.

This could prove just that.

Imagine if a group of players manage to fend off an alien expansion into a system, if a group of players could save an entire faction from annihilation.
They would become heroes, their name broadcast on GalNet, maybe new Stations would be built in the system and named after them.

I don't know, all I am saying is right now the game is building a toolset of mechanics and systems as well as lore and characterization. A lot of interesting things could happen.

Not that I think it would happen soon, but I do think that setting up Power Play makes perfect sense knowing that this could happen.

Now if an alien invasion started to destroy space stations on your trade routes :)

Man this game has so much potential !!!!

Oh, they're already in the game, well at least for the Polaris system.

Here's an old video. The footage you are about to see is completely real and not graphically edited. At 0:17, you can see a swarm of lights flying around on the screen.

(Oh my God, calm down already and take a joke. This reply was meant to look real until you read the description of the video and when it was created. Oh, and credit to the original creator just in case you try to find anything to criticize about this.)

Give me a way to join in as Federal Navy without choosing the Power Play Federation politician's. I'm currently Ensign and ranking up "just because the mission's there," give me a reason to strive to climb the rank's beyond that.

Basically all an Alien invasion would do is make the infighting inbred berks we have for leaders now work together to defend their fragile territories, it would enhance power play as there would be something to fight for.

Although getting a fine for scooping alien artifacts might put me off going for the thargons though so salvaging would have to be sorted ;)

Well seeing as how we persecuted and nearly wiped out the entire Thargoid race, they might be hell - bent on some payback.

Then again, they might not hold onto a grudge and hire someone/something else to do their dirty work for them.......

The Truth is out there.

Well... we know that there is a major update that will be announced in August that is NOT related to CQC. So here are my theories as to what this update will be:
1. Thargoids.
2. Planetary landings.
3. Extra-vehicular activity (getting out of our seats and walking around)
4. Character creation (individual commander models)

I doubt it will be #1 unless the announcement is going to be a paid add on. It will be crazy for Frontier to NOT charge extra for Thargoids because EVERYONE is going to be willing to pay for them.
Number two seems likely but I have a feeling that planetary landings will be mostly an auto-pilot affair and we wont get to spend a lot of time flying over beautiful landscapes... probably a well-disguised loading creen (similar to the FSD tunnel between systems) that will deposit us at the planet's surface on a predetermined landing pad.
Number three would be cool but I doubt Frontier is ready for that. Right now everything is modeled on a macro level and walking around means modeling the micro level details.
Number four is something that I see as inevitable at some point prior to number three. It will be really awful if we get the ability to walk around stations/planets but we all look identical to each other.

Yeah, I suspect Thargoid witll be the 21st faction but will have some stiff entry reqs like Elite and above combat ranking.

Just love this concept. Love it. Fingers crossed...

Given the state of our so-called 'civilization' - I'd say just ignore it.

If the governments aren't even able to control rampant Terrorism within their very core High-Security Systems due to gross incompetence and neglect - they won't care about an Alien Invasion either.

I'd say :
Take a nice ship, park it 500-2000LY away in a nice Tourist party spot (or see if Jacques Station made it out - then use this)... Grab popcorn & enjoy the view as System after System goes dark and GALnet eventually ceases to transmit.
Could be a nice start of "the great Trek" (Galactica-Fleet style), seeking a new home to resettle what's left of humanity :D

PS.
Since there's still no Alien assets in the Game outside of some canisters, V1.4 is the earliest, next candidate. Don't hold your breath, though.
Only if the Aliens are planned to serve as some Consoles'que PewPew targets - it might very well be coming around the corner.

I also had the Idea that a full-scale Invasion would only make sense after PowerPlay ran a sufficiently long time.
Players who wasted their assets into endless combat for merits and the already impotent governments in an even weaker, fragmented and vulnerable position.

But when it comes to the idea to unite against a common threat... Won't happen and won't work.
ELITE : Toxic does not support this idea, coordinated cooperation against a Threat was never intended. At best, you'll get picked up by some ganker while attempting to fight Aliens - or get blown up trying to return your badly damaged Ship for repairs.

When I look around the Universe - I don't find a single Government, Power or Element worth fighting for anymore. Because they're all exactly the same since V1.3, all the way down to the last Bulletin Mission...

Also, unfortunately, I find myself in agreement. However we can play the game how we want still. I remember when the grouping mechanism was first discussed publically. It was considered that players would form large gropus to fit certain playstyles and interpretations of the galaxy. As far as I remember open and solo were just preset groups so people could get the idea, not defaults intended to divide the community in a binary fashion.
So, I think although I agree I still do not think it had to be that way.

I more favour a return of the Thargoids to create the 'common enemy' as well as hopefully another alien race in their wake.. something even more menacing that made the thargoids run back to the area of space that we inhabit having realised they can not expand their realm the other way. So while we are initially fighting the Thargoids, we will also see something even worse that we then need to work somewhat with the thargoids in order to combat. So with the introduction of new alien technologies, and 'research' we can then develop weaponry, sheilds, propulsion etc that allows us to expand and take on what initially seems impossible.

I do however agree that the biggest problem with implementing all this would be how the commanders in the game actually choose to play ED... there is far too many folk out there who have interpretted multiplayer as just being a totally lawless way to play who have made it their goal to grief, and their goal to basically just destroy for luls rather than help nurture a game for the good of the many. Those type of players will struggle to take on the greater threat as they will get no response to their calls for help, due to their in game rep and so will just settle back into their old ways of griefing and the playstyle that settles with it, thus just creating chaos for everyone else.. hopefully those people will get bored and move onto other things.. but sadly they are often here to stay.

Me though, i've wanted Thargoids, and other alien possibilities since the game launched, but i would dearly love for exploration to uncover the first signs of this first, because this would get a lot more commanders out there looking for potential threats.

i stay hopeful.. but who knows? We'll see if we the players are listened to on this one, surely there are folk in FD who know what is in the pipeline laughing at all our posts right now, as only they know when.. and how this would begin.. the rest is pure speculation on our part :)

I hope this happens because then we would have to hold syestems long enough for evacuations and start helping scientists develope super weapons.
