Is an exploration Annie worth it?

Just contemplating...

Should I buy one? I love my Asp, and my Krait... but I hear the Annie steers like an oil tanker. Is it really that bad? Has anyone got one, then regretted it?

Thanks guys.

I took one out to Hawkins Gap and back,........never again.
Asp and Phantom are much nicer, they don't steer like a tectonic plate and you don't have the half of your field of view filled with Anaconda.

So yes, I regretted hauling that thing with me on an exploration trip.

I got one and then turned it into a mining ship. It wasn't particularly bad to be honest, I just liked the look of the Krait Phantom better for exploration.

The handling was something I could have lived with, it just came down to personal choice in the end. A quick look at station traffic on the Colonia highway will tell you that there a lot who can live with the Anaconda as an explorer.

If you are only used to flying these super lightweight small/med class ships, then yes the Annie will feel heavy. To me the Annie feels like a fighter jet, one of many reasons I rarely fly mine.

With all that being said, it makes a great explorer, smooth handling in SC, more internals then you will know what to do with. A choice of two fighters to take with you for sight seeing (Annie bridge visibility is poor, even in VR)

And of course it does all that whilst maintaining a massive jump range cough* stupid hull mass cough*

Compared to an Asp or Krait the Annie is a ponderous beast. With FSS it's less of an issue. If you like landing on planets you will notice the Annie has some drawbacks. First thing is that the view is rubbish, pretty much everything below you is obscured by the nose. It's also hard to find somewhere to land. I haven't regretted buying an Annie, but it wouldn't be my first choice for a long trip despite it's range .

You gain access to a fighter hanger if you want, plus you can fit a first class passenger cabin for sightseeing missions without losing too much jump range, if you want. Basically, it's luxury exploration.

The rear-bridge design of both the Anaconda and the Corvette take some getting use to. Being accustomed to operating large boats (33-60 foot), it doesn’t bother me having that much of the front of something sticking out in front of me.

Handling-wise, the Anaconda is certainly different than any smaller or front-bridged ships. It grows on you and you get use to it, or you hate it, and that’s about all there is to it. I don’t mind these ships and own 2 Anacondas, outfitted for different tasks.

But my current exploration ship is a Beluga. Best handling large ship there is. Biggest fuel tank in the game. Great internals, great view, it’s tough to compete with, unless Exploration = Jump Range, in which case, a stripped Anaconda is your only option.

Frankly, who care how it steers now. We are chasing blue blobs for exploration and on the off chance you want to pew-pew a planet (er...probe) somewhat slower vectoring is not really an issue. Outside view? Thats what the external view camera is for. 'Conda carries everything and has room left over and nicely appointed still jumps in excess of 70ly. That will do. Price isn't too bad either. All in all, do what you want. Don't like it, sell it. It will make you a ton of credits that more than cover the 10% return loss. Quit asking, buy up and head out.

Clearly OP cares. And yes, the Anaconda has horrible handling compared to the other ships mentioned.

Thanks guys.

Mine is reserved for super deep space, very long term explorations, where the Annie excels.

I guess he means that exploration has changed, cmdrs no longer have to fly all over the place scanning every dust ball, the ship now autoresolves close range targets, the FSS does all the scanning, we just sit by the main star.

Am doing a lot of deep space mining in a T-10, I approach a gas giant and all it's moons get fully scanned. Previously I would have to point my ship at every moon to check the material list.

The need for maneuvering in SC during exploration has dramatically decreased.

The sluggish supercruise handling of the conda is one of the reasons why I generally explore in a Corvette instead. But if you really, really want to get somewhere fast & need that high jump range there's no substitute.

It's worth having a Conda hull even if you don't enjoy exploring in it, it's one of the most versatile ships in the game.

What's the Conda like scooping?
What's the heat like?

I've got a shell parked up, might have a go with it.

Scooping is a breeze. I have the 7a and skimming around the star to line up next destination is a fill up. I run pretty cool so I scoop 800 plus and stay under 66. Fast.

Another vote as alternative goes to the Beluga. Luxury exploration with as many slots as an Anaconda, more maneuverable in SC at the cost of jump range.

Yes, but it now matters quite a bit less (really only if coming about to travel to a planet of interest).

It is worth the versatility.

Edit; I think "horrible" is a bit strong. Not as good as most others well, yeah.

The Beluga has it pipped now, what with the change to its cabin slots and the introduction of the guardian FSD booster. It has a huge fueltank and handles well in SC.

Depends on your power plant. I always use a-rated and never had a problem. D-rated may not work as well, but someone else would need to confirm. I can say an a-rated pp wasnt a compromise on jump range if you can get a class 5 in there.
