Is anyone else disappointed with planetary rings?

Most rings I encounter just don't look very good. A repetitive gradient usually. I'm sure FD can improve on these. Anyone else feel underwhelmed by planetary rings?

Yea me too. Since I first saw them, also the draw distance, they become some kind of poo in the distance and change their colour and look to the supercruise thing even further away. Additionally they look like plastic from close distances.

Create more differences and variations (especially in seize!) and add more 'depth' in terms of more tiny 'caves' in the stones. Also make them destructable, especially when mining. It just annoys me that there is nothing more coming out of the asteorid evem though it just lost 0.001% of its mass and still looks the same as before. Also keep the mining impacts and don't remove them after like 10 meters of drilling.

Edit: Think I misunderstood the topic, but still think the asteorids look bad :D

Hello there

I too thought this recently, but then a new system I was in had such a beautiful ring formation it took my breath away.

One needs the right lighting and physical make up to get the pretty ones.

Just like real life there is lots of mundane looking systems but then *pow* something hits you.

Mine had thin 2 contrasting rings on of which moved far faster than the other and a sun just low enough on the ring "horizon" to shine through and light up all the dust/volumetrics.

Absolutely stunning.

I suppose its like looking in your back yard and then looking at the Amazon jungle. Yup they're both earth and plants but some are more interesting than others.

A repetitive gradient

It's a bit weird when you see that. I'm gussing the UVs for the ring texture are scaled up a lot when you get that repetition, if that's the case there should probably be more of a limit on scaling things there.

Hello there

I *think* I still have my clipper there, next time im in game ill note the system.

I tend to go where my nose leads me rather than have a general area of operations.

Orlok has an undead zombie crew btw ;)

I quite like the rings and the effects but then I have my graphics up on high. I think they did a pretty good job with them and I like the descent down into them when you truly get a sense of just how vast the things are. Anything can be made to look better so yeah, they could work on them but I'd much rather they work on the naff planet textures - photo planets in space don't work and gas giants with static cloud formations? This storms down there are raging at hundreds of miles an hour and yet in ED they're solid and unmoving. The planets need massive amounts of work and imo one of the worst parts of the game and immersion breaking too.

There are quite a few out there that have a tiled appearance which kinda kills the moment. Like this one:

And then you find others that looks natural...

Maybe someday they will get them all properly generated.

Even with the wind speeds, you wouldn't see movement on a gas giant as they're so far away.

That is Jupiter over 1 day, so every second of footage is 1 1/2 hours real time. You'd see it move if you parked and took comparative screenshots, but not while looking at it.

Why don't rings look like this?

Instead, they look like this:

My only gripe with Rings from a distance is that they often look absolutely regular, symmetric and perfect... like a record holding 100 identical tracks that repeat accurately.
I also wouldn't mind seeing them volumetric to some extent. Currently they're a flat pixel line when viewed from the side, indicating no Asteroid Ring in the entire Galaxy has a higher Y-spread than about ~10km.

How they look from the inside has been discussed very often after the GFX downgrades, it leaves tons of room for tweaks and improvement.

Icing on the cake would be some physics. Bumping them around and having to take care not to get caught inbetween two that just happen to move :D
(just something dynamic within the local instance, something that gives a little challenge or plain visual entertainment flying inside them)

From outside :
I dont mind them very much they can look nice , but often they dont match the density of whats going on inside and feel ''sharp''

Edit : from inside :
oh gosh yes , there the one thing I cant stand !
the lods are allways the wrong colour and 90% of the time the density of the lods dont match the ones up close... I hope they overhaul it

I think they look fine. Compared to the real thing:

And Saturn's rings are incredibly thin. They are actually less than 100 meters thick. Although there seems to be some structures that are in the scale of a kilometer:

I think they look all right but then my computer doesn't have a top of the line graphics card. I tend not to spend much time in / around them except for lately when I've been hunting pirates as part of the Xelabara Community Goal. Have to say that while looking around for potential targets in rings I'm happily playing the asteroid field chase from Empire Strikes Back in my Asp :)

Hello there

Why, yes, yes I do :)

Just FYI my machine is old and clunky so I have everything on medium or lower, so it's not my having an uber mega rig.

Some rings are prettier than others.

I'll show you mine as soon as im able.

I agree that the ring textures really need a tweak, along with them casting shadows on the parent world. They often look very, very repetitive and uniform. They sometimes remind me of a vinyl record :/

There isn't really much happening at the bottom end of the scale either - all our gas/ice giants have ring systems, but all but Saturns are very thin and tenuous. You don't really get this degree of variation in the game (I can't actually remember what these worlds look like in E: D - it's been a long time since I visited 'home'). Rings in E: D just seem to come in sizes 'big', 'bigger', 'biggest' !

Also, you normally can't even see the rings when you're at one of the moons or the local station, because they all orbit in the same plane. This is, however, scientifically correct (although, I suspect there'd be a bit more variation in orbital inclinations that we see in-game).

Maybe season 3 will be atmospheric planetary landings, and season 4 will be 'rings get some love'. But I hope it happens long before that.

Aren't the rings of Saturn and the gaps between them the result of "shepherd moons" which create gravitational effects upon what would be a flat disc/plane? I've seen a couple of moons that are very close to the outer edges of rings in ED but not orbiting within them, which iirc Saturn has and causes the gaps. Maybe stellar forge doesn't have this modelled, or maybe the data hasn't been pulled from it and put in game yet.....
