Is Apex quick-travel?

Why are some of you discussing this as if new players will not start out with a free Sidewinder when EDO drops?
Or are you betting that a significant number of people are going to show up to play legs, and have little to no interest at all in the main part of the game, spaceships?

By the time someone leaves the starter area they could easily have enough to A rate the sidewinders FSD, buy a fuel scoop and have 15-16 Ly jump range. That is only 1.2M Cr. A few hours after that and they could have easily made the 11-14M Cr needed to buy a DBX, A-rate the FSD, and move that to 35ish Ly jump range. All b4 ever visiting Elvira or Felicity.

They've specifically said you'll be able to start the game without a ship, and play it entirely on foot without ever getting behind the stick if you don't want to.

Whether that's the right direction for Odyssey or not is up for debate, but I don't think there's much doubt at least some new players (and existing players on alts) will choose to experience the galaxy that way. Not because the ships are inaccessible, but just because it's more their bag, or they want to do something a bit different.

Why would anyone do that? Unless, oh God, they are going to CQC this aren't they? OK, I'm out, going to avoid EDO threads going forward...

We don't have enough information to say what sort of enticements there will be. However, I'm definitely interested in slumming it and just going pedestrian-only for a little bit to experience the galaxy from a different perspective, put myself in a different set of shoes so to speak. I certainly wouldn't restrict myself to that forever, but I'm curious to see how it plays and how it feels to be an even smaller part of the universe.

Got to say I hope it won“t be just a screen with 3 choices:

Standard Sidewinter with 1000 credits, SRV Sidewinter with 1000 credits, or just 35 000 credits....

Because every noob would be like "wow, over 30x more!" and then use it in some FPS and travelling at board of an Apex...

Then, just as one of my friends, realize they have run themselves into so corner and penniless, that even my carrier markets could not save them as they did not even have anything to start any trade with...

Imagine if dirtlegs w/o ships will be able to travel faster than CMDRs :ROFLMAO:
I hope they do, significantly so, since there would be no point to using Apex if I could just fly there myself with my own ships.

How well does a handheld boomstick that you'll take in the Apex taxi compare to over 250 dumbfire missiles? ;)

Exactly. That's why I think the possibility of Apex being much faster than using a ship is a complete non-issue.

If you travel by ship you'll have a spaceship at your disposal at the destination. Most likely a carefully chosen ship, A rated, engineered, purpose built ship. If you travel by Apex, you arrive with nothing, you can only do ground stuff, you cannot trade, you cannot mine, you can't hunt pirates, cannot explore, you cannot do any of the activities we currently have. If you do need a ship at the destination, you'll have to order a transfer of one of your ships and wait even more than if you just flew it there, or buy a vanilla ship at the destination.

The 2 ways of travel do not compete with each other, and even if Apex is faster (I can't possibly conceive it otherwise, as placing players frequently in spectator mode for several minutes at a time would be a record breaking blunder) it certainly doesn't bring any "unfair advantage" over taking a ship.

If Frontier made Destiny 2, and before its release they had said that travel between planets was ā€œnot instant,ā€ would we be calling them liars right now? Or would we be defending them, because technically there are multiple animations of ships flying to/from planets, and a countdown timer? I suspect that we’d have people on both sides of this argument; which is why I consider Frontier’s statements this far to be utterly meaningless until we have more context.

I’ll say this, though: anyone who thinks Apex travel is going to be real-time passenger seat travel from A-B in an NPC piloted ship, with a view out the window and everything; is utterly bonkers delusional.

You’d best send a minibus because those missiles aren’t going to fit in the back of a taxi.
