Who gives a toss ?
He's working on the best project ever in the best way possible.
Personally I hope that he'll always be able to go out in public without being hounded by ats.
Obviously fanboy moments are excepted of course.

Is he famous? Well, a lot of people know what he looks like and a lot of people subscribe to his 'channel' of information that he provides. So I reckon he is famous.

But is he a celebrity?

Personally I really despise the whole attitude towards celebrities (in some cases I despise the celebrities themselves). I think the whole celebrity culture highlights some major problems with our society and also conditions the young to have unfruitful / unproductive aspirations.

Some celebrities appeal to different groups of people. In this case, DB and his work appeals very much to this community ie if you are reading this... you.

I've a lot of respect and admiration for DB and have even met him personally. I'd rather just think of him as a fellow computer geek (commander) with similar interests to me.

But is he a celebrity? Just interested to hear thoughts on this.

As a follow up note that that... If DB could influence the young to aspire to being like him, owning and running a business creating a product that is cutting edge and pushing the boundaries of computing - producing games that are so different from the rest of the '3 lives and your out' bunch.

David Braben is a known supervillain, with a bigger country than doctor doom and more power than the anti-monitor.

David Braben is not a celebrity. He is known in the gaming world and for its contribution in the computing. He is certainly known in the midst of celebrities (artists like singers, painters, photographers, actors, etc ...). But for the general public I think he is an unknown. In France if you ask who is David Braben, certainly that 99.95% of the population will say: Who ? Except the players of Elite, FE2 and FFE. However, with ED, he could earn 1%, 2% of popularity ?

To be honest a celebratity is somebody who is famous for being famous and has no talent what so ever apart from appearing in the media.

David is certainly a talented man and is famous for his programming work over 30 years as well as bringing programming skills back to the general public via the Pi.

So no he is no mere celebrity.

I think DB is a celebrity in the old sense of the word. He's someone who's work should be celebrated. Like a talented artist, musician or actor.

Unless he ends up in the jungle that is.......

If a celebrity is defined as one who is celebrated, then perhaps DBOBE qualifies, given he's thought of rather highly around these parts.

I think though, that modern celebrity is often taken to imply that a persons fame has taken on a life of its own, and broken loose from whatever talent (or lack thereof) caused their fame to begin with. In this sense, David does not qualify, and I hope he never will.

As for God... Who knows? What better way to get close to God that by being among the stars, though?
